Re: General heavy towing advice
Tuinvurkie/Karl,

Ditto for Roelf's request.

I am planning for Mabua and Khaudum via Windhoek with my Desert Wolf later this year before the rains or next after the water has gone down.

Thanks for the feedback! Will definitely put up some pics.

Our route will be rooiputs, nossob, matopi, mpaya pan and then out - sleeping 3 or 4 nights at each except just overnight at matopi.

Really looking forwards to testing the wranglers in the sand as well!

Re: General heavy towing advice
So... Some feedback. No pics yet. Working on mini trip report and still need to sort out the photies... Been a bit hectic at work since I came back - hopefully the late nights will be less this week ...

1. lowrange, cats we're right - the dunes part was a walk in the park. It was a non-event - I was hoping for at least a bit of action...

2. Had a jeep wrangler winching himself out using my recovery points (good thing he had a winch, otherwise I might have had to pull him out with the trailer attached

3. Goodyear Wranglers performed admirably - loving them after the first 6k kms. They love the sand - it was like they just didn't reach the point of digging in.

4. Fuel consumptions heavier than expected. Averaged around 30l/100km in the deep sand with the trailer. Open road was around 18 l/100km - much heavier towing than with my fathers echo 4. I suspect the miskruier loaded was closer to 1.3 or 1.4 tons. Normally my deep sand mileage is around 18l/100km and open road 11l/100km

Cats, Come in Cats....

You mentioned 6 bolts on each side. I crawled under my Gen 4 and looked for an hour. Ok I admired the beasts sexy underbelly. But could only find 4 a side.

Do you have a pic or diagram where the other two should be? It also seem that normal towbar places have no idea about the six a side.

It is only an option on certain makes of towbar. I will take a pic of mine tommorow av and post it here. I like the Frontrunner ones when I was shopping many years ago, so not sure what else are available lately.

Re: General heavy towing advice
An important item that may be overlooked is sudden failure of the cruise control.
At 100kmh or more, when towing up a hill, the cruise control can just turn off (6 times for me, and in both a petrol NP and a diesel NM).
In these circumstances the vehicle will slow very quickly and without the brake lights going on. By the time you react you could be rear-ended. It will take a while to get up to speed. So be ready, have your foot on the accelerator in these circumstances. If it doesn't happen you haven't lost anything, but if it does, it may save your life.
