Just a further update on this! 
The problem returned within a few days - Not the ATF as I thought.
Further investigation revealed a collapsed engine mounting on the driver side!
Replaced both - Engine now dead quiet!
PS - I bought a set of engine mountings from ALL MERC SPARES in Pretoria West for 25% of what the dealer wanted!
Took me 4 hours to replace - Not a job for the impatient!
