My experience is very similar to what is being described.
I had a 2003 Pajero (3.2) LWB, and it was probably the best car I have owned. I sold the car after many happy km and the most the car ever cost me was new injectors that I replaced at the 200’000km mark (I also replaced all the radiator hoses and oil pressure sensor at that stage). The car performed well and what always amazed me was that everything worked in the car… even driving through the Karoo 40 degrees outside, never missing a beat. It was only natural that when the time came to renew, I replaced it with another Pajero. This time a 2007 Gen 4 with 110’000km second hand model. After day 2 I realised that the new car has a better sound system, is little more refined (more silent) and has better lights… but the performance was not on par with the 2003 Gen 3. After trolling the Ausie forums I also thought that cleaning the intake manifold will change things and I got it cleaned, only to hear (little disappointed) that it was not really dirty. The next step was to take the car to Steve’s and I got it chipped (the performance is possibly on par now with the Gen 3 – seat of pants measurement, fuel consumption more or less unchanged). I do not want to go into the merits or demerits of chipping and I guess there are more disadvantages, but after 50’000 km I can say that I am still happy. I must also say that I never murder (or race

) the car, always let it idle after a long drive and when I tow it is only a small ventertjie, taking it easy on inclines. Thus I got no closer to understand why the performance was down compared to the Gen 3. My only guess would be that early Gen4’s were slightly detuned.
I still love the Gen 4 and plan to keep it for many years to come. Recently I got the fuel tank cleaned. It was really dirty with the filter pick-up in the tank totally clogged. Did it make a difference in performance, not really, but it does idle better because the diesel flow must have been restricted.
Regards
G

Thanks for giving us your experience Gideon it sounds exactly like mine and quite a few others on this forum. I tow a rig +- 1200 kg with my vehicle and I really miss that Gen3 torque. I have improved it as mentioned above but it still not quite what it should be. When I travel I like to keep up a fair average speed. On hills and inclines the speed drops off and I do not like pushing an "unwilling" motor. I do not know how Cats (he tows a 1600kg rig) and others cope. I am going to fit an EGT and then make some decisions.

Thanks to all. Very interesting. My 2007 model chipped, lacks power when towing a trailer with motorcycle on.

Buffelb. I also feel n lack in power with my chipped pajero. In town from robot to robot you can feel the chip working but 110kmh and up it lacks some power.
What chip do you have and where did get it installed from?

I have a 2007 Gen 4 purchased at the end of 2007 as a 'pre-loved' model (18000km). I drove it for about a week in December 2007 before it was recalled for a software update. Before that update the fuel consumption and the power were MUCH better! for example, I drove to OR Tambo from Pretoria and got a fuel consumption of 11,5 km/l (HONESTLY!) which I have only dreamed of since! Being only a woman

, Mitsubishi always poo-poohed my concerns in this regard, but now I see that maybe there is something fishy?!
I replaced the first lot of tyres with all-terrain tyres when they were done, and they also made a difference in fuel consumption. I now get about 9,5km/l on the open road, but only if I drive at 110km. Going at 120km/h uses a bit more (about 8,5 - 9km/l). And interestingly enough I only get about 8.5km/l when driving at sea level. Maybe that is a clue?
By the way, I now have 205000km on the clock and the car is still going well, but there has been a definite drop in power and fuel consumption in the last 20000km or so. First time I really noticed it was going up the pass above SANI (extreme incline PLUS extreme height above sea level) and somehow it feels as though the poor old stallion has never quite recovered from that shock in spite of a service since!
I hope we find some solutions, and would be most interested to participate in any collective testing. The car is (almost) stock standard with no major mods or replacements.

Well I am still waiting for my supplier to get "the one and only in SA" allen key plug" from CT. Once I get it I am hoping I can match it from a bolt & nut / hardware supplier. Once we have such we can see if the "little filter clean" can make a difference for others as well. It was the most effective of all the checks, adjustments and fixes with mine. The plug is most likely to get damaged getting it out, which once out you are able to get the filter out and clean it.

Peter
Maybe read this thread
http://www2.pajeroclub.com.au/forum/sho ... hp?t=52519
and the comment made on my posting there regarding fuel rail pressure regulator.
Do you know anything about that? Maybe also something to look at for your quest?
