Re: Early(2007-09) Gen4 cruising performance & fuel consumpt
Thanks Cats I had read it earlier this morning. I cannot find much on Google on the sensor and have asked Pasniny if he knows how they corrected it. ie a different / improved part number etc.

I know the ECU will pick up a higher than normal rail pressure but doubt that it will pick up a slightly lower than normal pressure, so I am very excited because frankly I was getting quite frustrated with this matter.

The wife normally uses the Paj to get to work. She gets grumpy about me "pulling the new car apart" every few days, when it is under going "investigative mechanicaning". I have to take her to the train at 6.00 am and fetch her again in the afternoon. I should be the grumpy one!

Peter

After some further research on Google it seems to me that the "Fuel Rail Regulator" and the "Suction Control Valve"(SCV) is one and the same thing.

That means this was already discussed in your quest and this is not a new possibility :(

Anyway. So we live and learn.

Cats I do still think this is a new possibility. The Suction Control Valve is mounted down on the actual pressure pump (Denso HP3), from where it supplies fuel pressure to the fuel rail on which is mounted the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Pasniny is refering to. So it is not the same and I am just hoping that we can hit this thing on the head now !

Hi there,

I don't think it is the same thing either. See page 12 and 13 of the attached document that I found after google search.

"The pressure limiter releases pressure when the internal rail pressure becomes abnormally high. The pressure limiter opens when internal pressure reaches 221 MPa (2254 kg/cm2), and closes when rail pressure
reaches a given set pressure. Fuel released from the pressure limiter is returned to the fuel tank..."

I see Pasniny is from Chipit Aus and has a lot of NS fuel system experience.
I also read on a post in Aus that the fuel rail pressure sensor can only be purchased as a unit with the fuel rail. That could be a problem.

Do you rhink he revered to the sensor? I think he pointed to the regulator, and as per Dough's post the regulator will limit the fuel rail pressure when it determines too high pressure, or too early if faulty or"weak" as Passini describes it.

Maybe that is why it feels less powerfull at highway topend as the fuel pressure is reduced?

I am just guessing here OK! I have very ltd knowledge of these things. Do you know if the regulator acts independently from sensor and also if it is sold seperately?

Edit - I wonder if the regulator can be tested to see if it works as per the post by Dough?

Can't one read the rail pressure on the OBD at max power demand and compare that to published rail pressure parameters?

8-) Brilliant idea Roelf. I will see if it is one of the parameters that is accessible on the OBD Torque app.

Yes I have been considering this since the post refering to fuel rail pressure as a possibility. I use a Launch (from Snap On?) to get the readings but it gets hairy when trying to drive too! (like when I was busy with checking and adjusting the turbo boost settings).

So if you would like to I can bring the Launch (wireless) and you can use your system and lets have a look at what we can find ?

Now I must go back and find your other questions you raised.

I went back and read his post twice. He refers to the rail pressure sensor. I know this activates the CEL if too high such as if a chip bumps it up too high. But how low is low and what if it is just down and that is what I suspect is possibly the case.

Maybe that is why it feels less powerfull at highway topend as the fuel pressure is reduced?

I see you can buy them on ebay (you can buy anything there these days!) but I think lets cross that bridge when we get there.

Yes you can there are specific readings - you need to have a test bench with different pressures which must give specific electrical readings.
