Re: Cold start issues again
I just thought I would report back on the cold start issue and the successful outcome.

I eventually took the Pajero to DupDiesel in Parow and the vehicle was fixed. There was nothing wrong with the cylinder head, compression, injectors, hoses etc. The head man at Dup explained that there is microscopic wear in the fuel pump that causes a loss of pressure in the fuel lines meaning that fuel runs back down the lines when the engine/pump is cold and the metalhas contracted. The vehicle will start normally as there is a bit of fuel in the pump but when this runs out the fuel that is being pumped up the lines does not get a chance to reach the pump as the pumps ability to pump when cold is reduced by the wear. This is why you literally have to crank the motor until the battery is almost flat to start it. The pump simply cannot pressurise the system.
However, when the engine is hot the various metals expand in the pump and then everything is ok as there is pressure and starting is no problem. The expansion cancels out the microscopic wear.

It cost me R4675.00 to have the pump rebuilt and she runs and starts like a dream again. :D

By the way, if anyone is interested, she will be for sale in mid April.

Andre,

I am glad for you that you got the problem sorted. Pity you have to sell now that it is fixed. Hope you find what you are looking for (including a buyer).

Will you be so kind as to register your service supplier here (for future use): Pajero Workshop Recommendations

Thanks,

Re: Cold start issues again
even with all the wear in the world there needs to be a leak to introduce air to take the diesels place. The culprits are usually the clamps on the small rubber diesel pipes running to and from the pump to the filter or the main pump seal as is so often the case on the 4m40.

Wear in the pump will create a lower injection pressure and will cause misfires and hard starting and bad economy.

If it starts and then stalls it means air was introduced into the system.

Seeing as he rebuilt the pump he must have changed the front seal and that would suggest to me that it was the culprit.

Should be good now again for many many miles more!

My family and I are emigrating to England ( Yorkshire ) on the 1st of May. I tried toc onvince my wife that I would be able to drive the Pajero into the container and try to pack the house contents around it but the boss won and the Pajero must go! :(

Re: Cold start issues again
Thanks for the replies.

I won't be coming back so I guess storage is out of the question. I had a look at Shogun/Pajeros and they are surprisingly cheap, although one must take into account the yearly MOT'S and the emissions taxes ( which will nail the older 2.8 motors which is why there are so many on the market. )

I saw a 2002 Shogun 3.2 Di-d for 1900 pounds which is an absolute steal as the vehicle looked to be in excellent condition!

Taking into account the narrow roads, fuel prices in the UK I might just lower my standards and, horror of horrors, might look at a Toyota Rav 4 D4d but then again I might not!

Re: Cold start issues again
Andre, you are describing my problem to a T

Mechanics dont have a clue and many suggestions. Have serviced diesel pump ( with now loss of torgue at low refs) and worked on injectors. It solved the issue for a while, but now one year later with cold setting in it is back. Must be a common solution? Spent R9000 for nothing it seems

After reffing engin at startup the car runs perfect, also great clouds of smoke just like you

HELP PLEASE
Also in CT, where can i have my car tested for its torgue or engine power?
Re: Cold start issues again
Why not try Steves Auto Clinic, or the many other advertised reputable diesel / tune up specialists in CT?
