Masker,
When my SWB 3.8V6 got the DELO treatment is was noticeably smoother and even more quiet than normal.

I so agree - mine too - and even the dipstick is clean now after the 3rd Delo oil change.
My daughter's GETZ is now also on DELO - I'd like to see whether it also silences her car's lifters...

Delo 400 in, now the V6 just purrs on idle. After about 50km the tappets have gone from tractor style to virtually silent. Economy has improved somewhat and the engine is running noticeably cooler as well. (Recorded a 12.9L/100km average on a combined 60km route over OuKaapseweg. Going to try some in my girlfriends Corsa next

Hi Guys
Just want to make sure, that you can use Delo 400 in a petrol engin as well?
I have a 99 Pajero 3.0 V6, and after my first service, the mechanic told me to use Helix HX7 since he believed its the best oil. So i have changed to HX7, but noticed that i have to top up every 1500km with atleast 1 liter of oil. So i contacted Shell and they said that im using the wrong oil, i must change to HX5 (high millage) 25W60. And so i changed again...but this time i dont need to top up between services (10 000km).
Do you guys think Delo 400 is better than HX5?

What is the mileage on your Pajero? Seems like that oil is exactly what you need.
In my view all of the established brands of oil are good, just make sure you use the right spec for your engine. "Right spec" refers to both viscosity (20W40, or whatever) and the API spec. Both appear on the oil can label and both are recommended in your owner's manual. I have never used any other oil than Castrol in any car I have owned and never had any remotely oil related problems. Had a Mazda 626 1.6 that has covered more than 330k at the time I was relieved of ownership by people unknown. Currently I run my '96 Isuzu KB250 (non-turbo) on Castrol GTX Diesel, after having used "normal" GTX for about the first 200k of its life. It has done close to 340k now. Uses a touch less than 500ml between services - I don't even need to top up.
But a turbodiesel does need a higher spec than that and an oil that is at least part synthetic is what I would use.
And that's my 2cw.

I rebuilt my 3.0 V6 completely and used delo 400 from day one. By the time i sold it (4changes later) it would keep the oil golden through the 10'000km changes.
I also never had a ticking lifter.
My opinion is that delo 400 is perfectly suited to the 3.0 V6.

Louis,
Your points are all very valid and correct. But like all things in life are some oils just better than others for the specific application. The spec (API grade SG 20W50) for my 3.8V6 MIVEC, that produces 184kw at 6000rpm, is covered by a twenty year old can of oil (Castrol GTX 20W50) in my garage. I will not for a moment accept that it is the best oil for my car, simply because it meets the minimum spec required by the manufacturer and supplied by the dealer for services. The oil supplied by the dealer also just happens to be just about the cheapest on the market. I actually started a thread in this section yesterday, when I realised my car was running on twenty year old technology in the sump. A new filter is already in my garage and a fresh batch of DELO 15W40 multigrade is going in on Sat morning. The next scheduled service is 5k later, which is the big cambelt one, and then I'll just have to convince the dealer to use the same.
Don't get me wrong, I grew up with Castrol and just like you did we never have an engine failure in our household.

Can't critisize other oils, but I changed from Helix HX5 to Delo 400 in my 3.5 Petrol (V6), and it cleaned the engine and silenced the lifters.
Delo is designed for Diesel engines, but has more than the spec for Petrol engines. Somehow it seems to be the perfect match for the noisy lifter engines of Pajero (until 2001)

At some stage I thought it good to use synthetic due to me driving it the way I did and this route went bad, she started sweating oil all over, it took me 3 flushes to get rid of the synthetic and all was good again. The reasoning behind it was that the thinner synthetic and the shaft-to-seal clearances did not work well together, dont know if this makes sense but it is what I experienced.
I read about similar experiences people had on other forums so that changing over to synthetic on a high miler is not such a good idea, it seems. using it from the start would probably give better results. A relative used Castrol Edge and now Castrol Sport (I think it is) right from the very first service have never had any problems with his engines.

And a good oil's companion: a handy universal filter wrench. The Pajero's filter is manageable with a normal "strap", but we also did the oil on my friend's Isuzu 280Td bakkie - now that has a filter position from hell. This tool worked wonderfully.
