That's good news. Nice to see Mitsubishi coming to the party.
As far as the temp gauge go, an engine can overheat without the temp gauge showing it. If it was low on coolant the little coolant that is there could be a t the right temp but the hotspots created in the head could cause the crack due to lack of coolant.
For what it's worth ask the agents to install a water loss alarm and EGT gauge at your cost ( cheap insurance compared to a new motor ). That will save you in future should Mitsubishi not want to come to the party again.

Fantastic news!
Do you have the option of buying the old engine?
I will take it if you don't want it. (depending on the value).
Offer them R5000

Although this is not common, my friend who owned a Bosch/Diesel Electric shop warned me about this before I bought my Pajero as he already replaced more than one alluminium head. Not only on Pajero's.

Hi 4ePikanini,
Have you fitted an EGT to your Pajero?
If yes what type and could you post a photo of where etc.
Thanks.

No. I am yet to hear of a 4m41 that failed due to EGT from owner abuse. Only lack of (or poor) coolant/oil will kill the Di-D.
I don't see the the need, I have driven my dad's Di-D with an EGT so understand what happens when I do certain things and I drive accordingly.
I would much rather spend the money on a coolant loss alarm (my pajero has oil pressure sensors and low oil alarm so I'm redundantly covered there)

Hi Marius,
"I don't see the the need, I have driven my dad's Di-D with an EGT so understand what happens when I do certain things and I drive accordingly."
Can you give us some insight into how you "drive accordingly" with your DiD? What should and shouldn't one do?
Thanks!

The only thing I avoid is full throttle against a long uphill for long periods (IF it doesn't accelerate).
Other than that I drive very easy until it's up to operating temp and allow a cool down idle before shutting off.

Did you install aftermarket sensors?
