When we finished our studies a lifetime ago, my best mate bought a crate of wine, sat his dad down and while they were enjoying the wine he told his dad everything he did while at varsity.
I think it is time the 4E clan sat down around a glass of wine and reason out their opinion on 2-stroke oil.
Dilemma, who do I believe: somebody my age or my son's age?

Roelf,
- Your PCV system introduces oil into the combustion chamber as well, but I have never heard of this fouling the Cat
- even though much less in quantities, that sump oil does not burn 'clean' as 2-stroke oil does.
- 2-stroke oil burns clean and removes carbon deposits. Look at a properly tuned 2-stroke engine. The combustion chamber & sparks plug have no oil / carbon residue. My experience is that 2-stroke engines' combustion chambers in general look much better than those of 4-stroke engines.
- Look at your exhaust at the end of your trip. If you don't see oil/carbon there, there won't be any in the cat either, right?

Thank you.
Who listens to youngsters anyway?
E4Pikanini,
I have real respect for you technical insight and knowledge, but I'm gonna go with your dad on this one. I hope I'll not mail you in a few weeks time begging for advice on how to fix a broken cat!

I'm very confident that you won't have an issue if you use 2-stroke oil. I just don't like telling people straight up what to do. It keeps me safe.
I always condone publicly to use the manufacturer recommendations
( even when I disagree ) as the blame can go to them if something fails.
I give facts and my opinions and leave the decision to the owner.

That's fair.
Point taken.
I will keep an eye on things and report back in a few week's time (if all goes well).

Remember you will only see after you have 500,000km if there was any damage.

Gents,
The deed was done!
I ran on 2-stroke oil across our country. The mix was 300ml in Barberton, 300ml in Kathu and 300ml in Port Nolloth. - considerably weaker than 1:200
1)The cat is still OK! Teunsb, you have me worried. I think I'll buy a new cat now and store it for 15 years.
2)The loaded SWB, with a loaded trailer in tow, repeatedly used less than 12l/100km cruising at 115km/h for hour after hour. Under those conditions I would get to 300km before reaching the half-tank mark, better than anything I ever achieved before (with a unloaded car).
I have not added any 2-stroke oil since Port Nolloth - not too keen to push the envelope. There was quite a noticable smell of "scooter" from the exhaust (particularly in the mornings from a cold/rich engine.
I like to think that the long run to the Richtersveld (with a sleepover at Kathu) has cleaned out all the carbon and that there was some lubrication in the "dry" parts of the head.
Thanks for all the input into helping me make up my mind.
Regards
Roelf

I have used 2 stroke oil in the Pajero since I got it at the end of October last year including a trip to the Lowveld. The average consumption on the Lowveld trip was 7.7 km/l. Then the possibility of killing the CAT made me stop using it but now I am tempted to start using it again - I still have 500ml standing around.

Andre,
I'll tell you.... this whole CAT thing is bugging me something terrible.

...and I'm still a strong believer that there is no need to add 2-stroke oil to any diesel fuel...
...it just helps the 2-stroke oil manufacturer on turn-over...
