This video is not for exactly this same lifter but the cleaning method is the same.

I also decided to fill the cavities of the rockers with oil before I inserted the lifters ... why I did this I don't know, maybe to make sure the rocker tubes is filled with oil.

In the comments below that video the OP of that video states: "Always reinstall hydraulic lash/lifters on an SR20 engine full of oil, the objective is to remove all of the air in the process above."

So it seems like you did the right thing!

The manual states to clean them in diesel, the video oil.
According to the manual you leave them filled with diesel from the third container.
When I did mine I cleaned them in paraffin(1st and 2nd) then when they where nice and clean I filled a container with delo to fill and fit them full of oil. Worked well. The paraffin is nice and thin and cleans out thick oil well, while installing filled with oil made more sense
