Re: Chip 3.5 V6 Pajero?
Macjohnw,
Chipping an engine has and will be a very cotentious subject. The only way of getting more power out of an engine is to improve the flow of air through the engine or increasing the thermodymamics of the engine. Increasing the flow can be done by bigger valves, higher lift camshafts, bigger ports and bigger/faster outflow of gas and a higher compression. All of these require / demand a higher fuel flow. Chipping is fine tuning the timing - making it earkier and nearer to detonation and adding more fuel. The dyna-tune people has more tricks up their sleeve(s) than a lorry load of car hijackers. The only place where a truly reliable dyno reading can be taken is in a laboratory under stringent control of temp, pressure, humidity, etc.

I do not know how old you are but if you are one of the less young persons like me, you will remember the times of the hi-lifting door handles, the high compression hubcaps, the orange on the aerial, the exhaust pipe with nothing in it, etc. Some drivers swore by it that removing the silencers and making more noise, made their cars faster AND lighter on fuel!!

I would like to suggest that you and all the potential "chipping" people contact Jakes Venter. He is the technical edditor of CAR magazine. He also writes for other magazines and is very, VERY knowledgeabe, has an engineering degree to give some status to his opinion and in fact has always been more than willing to discuss how to truly increase the output of engines and at what cost. Maybe Simon should contact him on behalve of the Pajero club and ask Jake to write an article or articles on chipping, dyna tuning, etc.

How about it Simon?? Regars, Cloyd

Re: Chip 3.5 V6 Pajero?
Hi Guys

Just to revive and old post...

I hope I can tap into the vast experiance of the guru's out there with regard to a Dastek Unichip. I found one in my Paj last night when re-routing my dual battery system cable, its a older type Dastek Unichip - see pic.

Now, I want to have my Paj remapped as I had some branches fitted and have a free-flow exhaust. I am low on power have flat spot at low revs(1500-2000 rpm), and hopefully maybe slightly improve on fuel consuption. I knew by putting in branches I would lose low down power, but I did it for an economic reasons not performance reasons as my OEM manifolds were badly cracked. I did not know that the Pajero had a unichip fitted by the previous owner, and thus it was mapped on the standard engine, not with my exhaust modifcations.

What should I look out for whan they re-map the as not to fool me into believing in performance gains?? All that I could pick up is that they should not play with the ambient correction on the dyno?

Any tips & tricks that are normally pulled on unsuspecting customers? I am doing it at KSD in stikland, apparently they are the go-to-people in Cape Town for this sort of thing...
