Yes we do have the means to relearn the ECU. My son is the wizard with that stuff (Golf's, Audi's, BMW's, etc). Me I am an old timer who grew up with the old type diesel pump and injectors who is learning something every day :geek: .

If anyone wants I can source the part from the parts wholesaler @ R2200.00 (including, collection, VAT, etc). We can fit it in the workshop and relearn the ECU @ R700.00. The only thing is, we need to know the pump number as mentioned to order the correct SCV. We have a clever camera (borescope) but that is temporarily out of action at the moment.

I phoned Mitsubishi, gave them my VIN number and they gave my SCV part number as 1460A037. So is there a way that the dealer can diagnose the SCV for performance or operation?

The part number you refer to is the same as mine, so if you wish we can order the same part as I did myself, for you. Being a special part we would need an EFT to cover the cost of the part (R2200.00). I sent you a PM with our contact details.

I also fitted an SCV with part number 1460A037 to my Pajero, to sure the mild surging.

It made no difference to performance.

I haven't done any relearn of the ECU. As far as I know you are meant to do an "injector small quantity relearn", which AFAIK can only be done with the Mitsubishi MUT III tool/software, which only the dealers have?

Well we hooked up and left for a weekend away on Friday. We were only going away for a weekend so we were not that heavily loaded. The traffic leaving Pta was terrible and did not get that much better all the way to Sondella. I was at that point still not sure and hoping for a qieter return on Sunday.

Well it was not that much quieter but I timed Rigel ave hill just right.
I hit the bottom of the hill at 130km/h and by the time we got to midway I could see that there was a bit of an improvement but definitely not the "wow" I have been looking for. What I am noticing also is that the transmission comes out of lock up and the shortly after that it kicks down to 4th even only with a moderate foot on the pedal (using spped control in hilly sections is just out of the question vs my old Gen3) and the engine revs seem particularly higher than what I remembered about my Gen3. ie it is as if Gen4 4th is a lot lower than the Gen3. Maybe a lot of the issues we are having are to do with the transmission moreso than the engine as Cats mentioned. Comments ????
A serious dissapointment at this stage.

Eish. I suppose one should not expect magical cures, but there was always hope. I must say I have started to accept that my gen4 is not as peppy as the gen3. I will probably chuck out the cat to get it to breath a bit better and maybe transgress my old rule, "chips are fried and eaten", and possibly see if a chip will get a bit of the horses back.

Peter. Do you think the gen4 fan is bigger and noisier than the gen3? I was wondering about another post where I realised that my gen4 does not have an electric fan in conjunction with the normal viscous fan as was the case on my gen3. Did they not maybe put a bigger viscous fan on the gen4, making the electric fan obsolete, but robbing costly kw's from the engine with this?

In the mean time I would like to determine if the readings I am getting on my OBD2 port is consistent with others.
Highest boost value I get is 11.9. Is this correct?
What should my MAF meter reading tell me?
Why is my ambient intake temp often around 70-90degrees!? Is this right? Should it not be a lot lower? Does this not indicate a blocked intercooler maybe?

CATS
PS - I despise the gen4 Pajero autobox coming from my old gen3 manual for towing.

CATS we can meet up some time if you like to feel the difference in performance is with a chip...

First of all I believe my problem is / feels like a complete lack of torque at cruising speed. To Sondela and back with a load, I was getting 6.5 to 6.8 km/l indicated. At pull away it seems about normal. I like using Rigel ave hill as a test as it has been used on a host of different vehicles and I am used to the norm. Coming up there on Sunday brought back memories when Ford / Mazda first brought out their 2.5tdi, working with Ford we used that hill every day. That old tech 2.5tdi would have run rings around my struggling 3.2did. My son's 2.5tdi Triton with a heavier load performs a lot better. (I am not the happiest chap at the moment - I feel betrayed !!!! Spending that amount of money and it goes .... Having my son chirping me that I should have bought a Sport does not help! - I am starting to wonder if it should not have been a Toyota!!!!!).
I now need some time to calm down and think logically. Man oh man I wish we could get to the bottom of this :( .

Cats, your comments: In the mean time I would like to determine if the readings I am getting on my OBD2 port is consistent with others.
Highest boost value I get is 11.9. Is this correct? - What are you reading that in psi? If so then yes for an OBD reading. The OBD to me is an indication only (electrical) and as someone has mentioned (Marius?) rather use a mechanical gauge to get it set 100%. I must add that mine was a bit low and I went to serious extremes to get it spot on and the reward was very small / virtually nothing. What I am saying is, I do not think that is where the problem is. I will gladly put my mechanical gauge on for if you wish.

What should my MAF meter reading tell me? MAP sensor reads manifold pressure and with engine off also reads atmospheric which often throws people when reading turbo (ie turbo + atmospheric)

Why is my ambient intake temp often around 70-90degrees!? Is this right? Yes this is about right considering that you have hot blow by air coming from your tappet cover. I am busy putting a system together which will a) cool blow by air from the tappet cover and b) trap oil vapour and return it to the engine. For every one degree rise in intake temp, the exhaust temp rises by three !!!!

Should it not be a lot lower? Does this not indicate a blocked intercooler maybe? I have had a look at a number of intercoolers (from Fords 2.5tdi, Landrovers, etc's trouble times). I have always found a bit of oil (maybe a tablespoon full) but never blocked. The turbo boost should move most obstructions (oil) through the cooler. Because the EGR connects onto the inlet manifold there should never be any carbon (ie only oil).

Talking auto box, I paid particular attention to the auto box over the weekend. Something I also noticed (comparing Gen3 to 4) is that the Gen4 transmission does not "predict" your ideal gear as the Gen3 did so beautifully (ie as you slow down the box drops down automatically, so that when you do put your foot down, you are in exactly the right gear). The Gen4 sort of does it but not well. I often found the box changing down but only as and when I accelerated.

Anyone got a nice Gen3 engine and auto box for sale ? Anyone want a nice Gen4 engine & auto box - just kidding :)........ - for now!!!!!

PeterPot,

I would have loved if I could help with the technical stuff but I don't know much about it.

All I know is that I could also feel a performance difference between my Gen3 & Gen4.

I still miss my Gen3 on the highway and on 4x4 tracks....

Just caught onto this thread now... seems my grand ideas of changing my gen 3 to a 4 is in the dust now... my gen 3 goes like a freaking rocket for a 2 ton 4x4 easily getting to 160/170kmh and holding it speed up big hills
