Hi Guys,
I echo the concerns about fuel consumption!
Our Gen 4 has now done 112000k and shows no signs of wear just a bit more thirsty than I expect. In every other vehicle that I have owned in the last 30 years I have been able to consistently beat what the manufacturers quote for fuel consumption (ie I can drive economically) but the Paj has me beaten.
We have just done a trip (Durban - East London - Mossel Bay - Cape Town - Baviaanskloof - East London - Durban) almost 5000kms at 10,98lit/100k (9,1 k/lit).
I always run on 50ppm diesel, so I can't blame poor fuel.
No mods / chips so it should be what Mitsu claim!
Guess we just have to keep on working at the problem.

wow, your standards are high. I would love to get that economy with my 3.2....

Dan,
I agree with Kurt, .
If you consider 11L to a 100 as a "problem to be worked on", then I think you are never going to enjoy your Pajero.

DanB, if you say your fuel consumption has dropped from what you were getting (and nothing else has changed - no roof racks, bigger / new tyres, etc.) then I would say something is possibly "amiss". At 112k km that motor is still like new. Hopefully we can help you get that fuel consumption back!
You sound like a serious driver and so believe if it was the Suction Control Valve, you would have felt the perculiar surging sensation when pulling uphill. I doubt that it is turbo boost - why should it have changed ?
I would put it down to two possibilities a) the common / renowned muck in the inlet manifold problem and b) the small filter on the pump that was mainly my problem. Nothing else comes to mind.
You may be like most of us that would rather have their vehicle std / untampered / modified. I would strongly suggest though that you have the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) blocked off. If you google this you will see it is a common practise with no negative effect to the motor. You simply slip a piece of tin cut to the shape of the gasket. We do not have exactly the same setup with the 4M41 as overseas and I have mine completely blocked off (no small hole in the blanking off plate) and the ECU (engine computer) is quite happy and no Engine Management Light has come on in the 10,000 km since fitted.
You can have this done (or DIY) while checking / cleaning out the inlet manifold. I have been held up doing mine - hope to start today.
You could have the filter small checked if no / little improvement but the inlet and filter are all in the same area and it would probably be best to do it all in one go.

Peter,
Dan never said his consumption had changed. He is just disappointed because he fails to mimic the manufacturer's claims.

Mmmmm, I do see so. My bad. Sorry.

No prob
I only raised it because I believe 11L/100km is par for a DiD. I never bettered that with any of my (Gen3) DiDs.
To start scratching where there isn't a real itch, could be the start of other problems.
Peter, you are obviously very experienced, skilled and well equipped to carry out your tests. Most of us are not in that boat.

Ok so got the intake manifold off and ...... and ......... wait ..... for it ...... it was not blocked up with carbon! Sure it was sooty and not particularly clean but definitely not anything to impair performance. My son says "I told you so" - I say "well now I know for certain". After 110,000km and looking at the Ausie posts I was pretty sure I would find some gunk - but no nothing to clean out.
So this has got me thinking.......
The Ausie and other some other countries early Gen4 Pajero's (2007 - 2009) have Variable Geometry Turbo's (VGT's), Swirl Flap inlet manifolds, and 129kw. Our 2007 - 2009 Pajero's appear to not have any of these (ie - no VGT's and no swirl flap manifolds) and our kw are down slightly (117kw or so reported by Cats I think). Could this have been a decision by Mits SA to keep it simple and reliable while waiting for the 2010 140kw motor to arrive ? I have found that if performance is down, fuel consumption goes down because the engine has to work that much harder. Improve performance and fuel consumption normally improves (but you can never really enjoy both - its either or!!!)
Maybe Mits were a bit optimistic in their 2007-2009 fuel consumption figures and /or possibly used the Ausie type 129kw motor fuel consumption figure - would also explain Dan's concern.

Peter... I can bring my Pajero to see if my little filter is blocked and if it will change anything
I don't mind doing the work but don't want to do it alone. I might take something off the wrong side of the engine...hahaha

Howzit Nismo, I want to make sure I have one of those plugs in stock before taking that job. Those plugs are so tight I suspect the only way one might get the plug loose involves damaging the actual plug, plus I need to replace my plug.
