Exhaust
I want to put branches and full free flow system on my 3.5 v6. Can it be done and what type do you suggest? Will this make a difference on my fuel consumption?

Lawrence, my take on this is the following, some might agree, some not:

* Yes it can be done - branches and freeflow
* Type - if you mean stainless or normal steel: It depends on your budget - only difference is that stainless is more expensive but will last longer.
* Type - if you mean size: I would recommend a 63mm pipe with freelfow boxes - this might be a bit on the loud side, so decide what noise levels are acceptable to you. I previously only changed my 3.5 V6's back box with a freeflow box and could feel some driveability improvement regarding pull-aways etc., I never got around to doing a complete freeflow. Freeflow boxes coupled with a resonator-box might dampen the sound a wee bit.
*Type - if you mean manufacturer: Your choice once again. De Graaf/Cowley can do it for you if there is one close by, but as with all things, it's the not the spanner that determines quality, but the spanner holding the spanner.
* Your vehicle will be lighter on fuel, but not by large amounts. Low down torque will improve noticeably.
* I would not recommend fitting branches - the money spent is not worth the small gains. If you fiddle with the motor's heads like gas flowing, it might be viable, but again it will cost quite a bit.
*Note: when getting quotes, inquire about the pipe's wall thickness. Okes use different thicknesses and that will also have an effect on how long the system will last (+/-1.6mm - 2.0mm)

Re: Exhaust
Hi Lawrence,

I did the branch and free-flow conversion on my 2001 3.5 about a year ago.

The branches was made by Cowley as not all manufactures makes these for the Pajero and so I ended up with a full Cowley system in Mild Steel with a 2mm wall thickness.

What we did was to run two seperate pipes of 57mm from each branch into a meduim oval box with two 57mm inlet's and one 63mm outlet. From this Meduim oval box the 63mm pipe ran into the large round "chamberd" back box. The reason I opted for this design was to keep the noise levels down by using a round box at the back and secondly to eliminate the loss of too much back presure.

I also had a "chip" fitted and the vehicle dyno tested and mapped. After all of this the Pajero gained only 7 Kw and 20Nm torque. I still only get a avarage feul consumption of 7 l/100Km.

So If you want to spend 10K for minimal gain, I would suggest to rather leave it standard!

Regards

Johann

Re: Exhaust
I researched branches and freeflows etc last year. Having spoken to a couple of well known branch manufacturers, they both suggested to leave well alone. They admitted their own branches just do not last... yes, they do improve performance a little but the cost is prohibitive compared to the gains, and you will refit your old branches in 3 to 5 years.

Been there, done that (on a Golf 16V).

The only advantage was the sound!

Re: Exhaust
Hi there

Would there be any benefit by changing to a full stainless system on the petrol motor?

Yes!! Petrol motors go through exhausts like nobody's business when compared to diesels.

Thank you for your advice , I think I think will leave it stock if noise is the only real gain. I am still looking for a way to cut fuel costs. At the moment I get 7km/L. Any suggestions.

Nothing wrong with 7km/l.... I average 6.5 mixed cycle

Re: Exhaust
Hi fellows

I want to fit the stainless and leave the original manifold. Consumption is not an issue, low down power is.

I've had the pleasure of testing the diesel, and to me,petrol is the way to go (not debating).

I love the petrol, but was amazed by the low down torque on the diesel. Looking for the end of the rainbow!!

What gains would I have and what is the ideal size pipe, single or double?
