Air in fuel ?

Greetings all,
Have just completed a trip to Kariba with my 1997, 2800 Jap Import.Did an engine oil and filter change before leaving, and also put in a new fuel filter. Excellent trip towing for the first time, and she handled a 1100kg boat with ease.
When hot however, the vehicle will not start, even though the starter is spinning her over at some speed. We then bled the system at the fuel filter, and then she started...after spinning her a while. The second time we did it, there was an audible hiss as the air escaped. This is after travelling over 300 kms at 100 kms an hour! The engine isobviously at proper operating temp, although the gauge never showed above half-way. Can the vehicle run so smoothly and still have air in the system somewhere? We then just left her idling whenever we stopped for whatever reason, and no problems at all. Any ideas for me to look at? Is there perhaps another filter at the pump that I have missed?
