Irregular engine

My 2001 3.2 DID GLS has developed a problem, 285000km down the track. The local dealer appears unable to resolve the problem, resorting to diagnostic checks that reveal zilch wrong. The engine jerks and jolts when idling, say, at an intersection. Have tried injector cleaner without success.

Hi,
Have you disconnected the battery recently?
I think there is some sort of air-conditioner compensation on the throttle, which is cleared when you disconnect the battery. There is a procedure to follow, for the car to re-learn the air-con compensation at idle. When I disconnected the battery a while ago, the idle fluctuated a lot.

Your problem might have something to do with the air-con compensation?

Greg, thanks for the info. I ran through the reset exercise this morning and the vehicle appeared fine until the first intersection when the jerking and irregular idling kicked in again. Wonder if I need to disconnect that battery again and try tomorrow? Cheers, Tommy

Not sure if the DiD has an idle control valve but I I would be guessing it's that. What happens when you switch the aircon on or turn the steering to full lock?

Also check for a loose or leaking vacuum tube (there are quite a few of them!).

Simon, nothing happens and the revs stay as they were, around 750rpm.
4ePajero : where would I go looking for vacuum tubes? You are talking to a mechanically disadvantaged imbecile here. Just a hint : I recently had a new starter motor installed and on arriving home and switching off, I noticed an unnatural whine coming from the engine compartment. The solenoid had jammed and the unit burnt out whilst I was trying to disconnect the battery. I had noticed the engine ran differently before and after the installation so assume vacuum tubes are somehow involved around the starter motor and may have been removed and not reconnected during the change? (I reported this to the technician who did the change but he said he would take a look but nothing changed for there was no improvement. Your non-dealer mechanic may not know about the procedure to reset the management system following a battery disconnection.) Where can I find precisely where they are and where they should go? I am trying to avoid returning to an unhelpful dealer who plugs in the diagnostic machine and says : hey, nothing shows up so nothing we can do!! Tommy

Take it to a dealer, park it next to a similar model and compare the vacuum pipes.
They are ±8mm dia black rubber pipes. Start looking on the passenger side of the engine compartment.

Ek het onlangs 's soort gelyke probleem op my petrol pajero gehad. Op die einde was dit 'n petrol filter wat verstop was.
