Overfilling engine oil - Good or Bad?
I have a 3.2 diesel and noted that it is the 2nd time that the engine oil is overfilled when coming back from a service.

*Why is overfilling the engine oil bad?
*Is it true for both diesel and petrol motors?
*What could happen if this continues?

I requested them previously not to do this, but see it did not work. I would like to get my story straight before contacting the agents.

Re: Overfilling engine oil - Good or Bad?
check it next time before you leave the service department and make a huffy for the manager to see the mistake after you asked them nicely NOT to do it.

When there is too much oil in the sump the crank can catch stealing power and foaming the oil. The foamy oil has air that can be sucked up by the oil pump. Where there is air, there isn't oil :?

You also might get extra smoking because the extra foaming also causes extra vapors that gets sucked in by the PCV and oils up the intakes pipes, intercooler, inlet valves etc.

It can ruin your particulate filter and clog up the egr valve.

you may also blw a seal.

In the end it is not a good idea. drain some from the sump.

Ja, I will drain some of the oil tomorrow and it is the last time that they change my filters and oil. Thanks for the info - if the manager says it is no big deal and that it won't affect the engine I will then ask him kindly to put it in writing - I doubt that will happen.

I will contact the workshop manager and hear what he has to say.

Mac, did you contact the service manager? What was his response?

Mac,
What 4e says is perfectly true, but there could be a curve ball as well.

I found that the "correct" oil level produced an intermittant oil level warning light to illuminate. When you put the correct amount of oil in the car, you will find that the dipstick shows over fill. I ran three DiDs in succesion for almost a decade (at an average of 3000km/month) with the oil level almost a cm above the full mark.

super,

I contacted the agents and requested to speak to the workshop manager - he was out so I left a message. He did call me back later, but I missed the call - so will give him a ring tomorrow and keep you updated.

Roelf,

Thanks for the input. I plan to do the oil and filter changes myself next time - will then make sure all the old oil is drained and measure the exact amount of new oil and see where it shows on the dipstick. Our mechanical foreman mentioned the same point that you raised here - the disptick might not be the correct length.

I also saw today that the gearbox disptick was not replaced all the way and I could see grit on the stick  I drove dirt roads on Sunday.

Cant say that the agents have over / under filed my oil.. alsways spot on.

also, never seen my oil light come on either.

Re: Overfilling engine oil - Good or Bad?
Overfilling either points to a faulty guage or to sloppy workmanship.

If it is the latter, you should assume the same standard was applied to non-measurable items.

That means it is time to consider a new service agent...

Called the workshop manager back today after I missed his call yesterday - left another message as he was out. Will just put it all in an e-mail and make it an official complaint then.
