My Pajero 2.8 TDi is making a hell of a high pitched squeaky noise from the engine, what could it be? Any ideas, I've trieds to do some reading up, I thought it could be the fanbelts, tried the Sunlight test, but now I'm more convince its coming from the engine itself.

Are you sure it is not a bearing on a belt idler pulley?

I do not know much abouf turbo's and intercoolers, but let's hope it is not that!

Next check is temp & fluids. I assume oil, coolant is at the rjght level, ant temp does not pick up normally. I also assume there is no abnormal smoke?

Then check tension pulleys - when they go, they may be quite noisy. You can test them by spraying penetrating oil on their bearings - this should silence them for a while. Then check alternator & a/c pump. It helps to listen through a pipe held near potential culprit.

If all this fails, have the turbo & intercooler checked.

Hope it helps.

Thanks Guys.
I did all that, same problem the sound apears to be coming from the back of the engine itself...

Going to take it in to get checked out, seems like the begining of a big problem...Hope not.

Hope it works out OK.

Be careful not to allow the service agent to start replacing random items (at your expense) - ask them to fix the noise, and tell them that is (all) you are agreeing to / paying for. Too often are big expenses incurred only to find out the real fix was quite simple.

Try the "pipe - hearing test" I described above. Listen to all external parts. It may just be something like a diesel pump, alternator, water pump, rather than serious engine failure.

Please keep us posted.

Today, I took it back to the place that I got my exhaust fitted, as a friend said it could be something to do with the exhaust manifold etc, they checked the whole exhaust and manifold , no problems, same noise... then one of the guys sees that the turbo has a small gap, and says that may be the problem, the guy gets into it tightens two bolts and Whallah, noise gone, so I'm quite happy, as I had already written off the cash for my overseas trip to fix this problem and all he asked for for his help was a Coke, ( I gave him a bit more than just a Coke)

Loose turbo= Big noise=easy fix (but hard to find)

WOW,

That is the cheapest "turbo-job" I have ever heard of!
