Pajero Flat Spot
Hi Guys please help.

I recently bought a used 3.5 Gen 2 1997 GLS, the SAMCOR models with 280000km on the clock.
She is in a good condition and drives well.
Problem that i have is first cold start, she have difficulty to idle for about 10 seconds, then all of a sudden she idles normally. Also when she is cold she seems powerless.

Second problem is that if i accelerate from idle, there is a huge flat spot and hesitation before she responds.

I have already replaced spark plugs, repaired the butterflies, cleaned Airflow sensor and throttle body and stepper motor, but no luck.

The base CO2 is within spec and she does not have a co2 sensor.

Any ideas? :(

Re: Pajero Flat Spot
Nico,

Has you battery been disconnected recently?

I learned from this thread: BATTERY that the battery has a "relearning procedure" after being disconnected. Maybe your problem lies there?

BTW, with your km you could make it for the 17th spot on our TOP GUNS thread.

My vehicle also had a flat-spot at times. When I had my intake gasket (directly under intake) replaced by a genuine Mitsubishi gasket, the problem went away.

This would lead me to believe that extra air was being sucked in through the faulty gasket.

That's my 2c. No harm in checking.

Nico.

Re: Pajero Flat Spot
Nico has a very valid point there, the easiest way to check the ntake system for air leaks is with a tin of quick start, spray it along all the gasgets and seams and if you find the idling increasing at a certain spot that is where you have a leak.
Double check that you have the right plugs in the motor, Mitsu uses a resistor plug indicated by the r in the code, if not the management will go bonkers.

I'm no expert, but my Ford V6 DC did it at cold startm I used valve easy and the problem disapeared. Not saying you have the same problem but maybe...

Re: Pajero Flat Spot
Yhanks guys.

I find this morning that after after cleaning the throttle valve last night, she starts better, but the flat spot is still there. When engine is cold and i floor the petrol from idle, she almost stalls and backfire.

Also she does not seem to have power in this state.

When she is warm the flat spot is better and the power also seems better?

Re: Pajero Flat Spot
they have intelligent power control. The ecu needs to learn the new parameters based on your driving style etc. (like the autobox shift pattern)

Maybe try to disconnect both terminals from battery, wait 5 minutes, touch terminals together and then reconnect them to battery. This erases the ecu learned values.
