Greetings all.

Over the past few weeks my 2004 Paj gen 3 3.2 did auto has the following problem:

turn the key and the motor just cranks but does not start.
If I then turn the key off and then on again, she immediately starts. :D

does anyone know where I can start looking...no fault codes come up on the system

thanks for all your assistance

try switching ignition on, don't start it. Wait for a few seconds and the start or switch ignition off again and the start.

Only thing I can think of is the in tank pump being temperamental or the immobilizer (when it does eventually start, does it bellow a big puff of smoke out the exhaust?)

does it do this like clockwork or only sometimes?

hi Marius

I have tried that...turn the key, wait a few seconds for the glow plugs light to go off then crank it..usually this did the trick..Today twice she refused to start even after I did that.

Eventually she fired.

Once she starts, no smoke at all.. ans she runs 100%

regards

Joe

next time try priming the diesel pump before starting. If she starts right away you have a leak and I suggest you stop driving her as the diesel could be leaking into the sump causing a run away engine that can be fatal (to you and the engine)

Sorry Marius...am a bit doff here...how do I prime the diesel pump?...are you referring to the hand pump on top of the filter inside the engine bay?

hi all

it happened again 3 times over the weekend.. Stopped at the garage, filled up with diesel and she refused to start...cranked and cranked no go.

Switched key off, tried again, no luck,

got out the vehicle, locked and unlocked the doors, tried again, no luck,

primed the pump as per mail above...no joy.

Battery eventually ran flat.

20 minutes later attached jumper leads, engire fired first time. :D

now I am very confused....any advice where else to start looking?

thanks in advance.

check the butterfly actuation in the engine bay. it opens when the ignition is turned on and closes when you kill the ignition to make the engine stop smoothly without a stumble - it then opens again after a few seconds once the engine has been killed.

It may be acting funny and not allowing any air into the engine on cranking?

A helper is good here.

...... and you sure there is no puff of black smoke out the back when she eventually starts?

thanks Marius...I will check that today and make sure it opens and closes as described.

Not 100% sure about the puff of smoke, (I am usually so bedonnered by that stage  )...but will check......if there is a black puff of smoke, what does that mean?

thanks for your help.
