1995 3.0 V6 Big end/guidon pin knock?
After more than a 100 000 km trouble free km's the following started to become more noticeable the last 5000 km's

- When you pull away and the auto box changes over, just as you lift your foot of the pedal to let it change there is a definate ggrrrrrrrr sound coming from the engine @ exacty 3000 rpm. If I rev it up to 3000 rpm while parked in the garage and keep it there it is definately there, coming from the left hand side of the engine.

This is not hydraulic lifters ticking as I've had that before and had it repaired.

It is only there when you let the engine "coast" at 3000 rpm. While accelerationg / de-accerlerating there is no noise. Does not use any oil and I check this every Saturday. Fuel consumption is still the same as 8 years ago when I bought it.

During the 260 000 km service I did bring it to the attention of the workshop owner and and he indentified it as a possible big end/guidon pin knock?

I currently do less than 10 000 k's a year and the question is must I keep on riding like this? My answer is obviously not as I am mechanically pedantic and would like to have it repaired asap. But in fixing this the engine will have to come out and then I'm probably in for another R8k on top of the recent R4.5k service. I can borrow the money and get it done, but if I can post pone it a bit it would help.

Is this such a big issue, or can it wait another 6 months or so? What are the possible complications if its fails? Engine seize and another rebuild?

Otherwise the engine runs very well and dead quiet.

Thanks gents!

In your introduction you mentioned that it started after a major service?
What oil did they put in the engine? (Proof?)

Those engines just love caltex Delo400 (as do most other engines).
I would change the oil (out of principle)

my build cost me about R15k but I took no shortcuts and it included complete overhaul of block and heads.

you may get away with cut crank, set of pistons, bore & hone & headgaskets.

In my experience a clatter or knock at this kind of engine speed (and only at one speed) is more likely to be a piston slabb. This happens when the bottom of the piston below the rings gets a little play in the barrol. I like the idea of putting some good quality oil in. It will kind of fill the gap.
Gudgion pins you will only hear at low revs, like idling. Big ends kick up hell as soon as you touch the accelarator. However i'm afraid to say that it points to engine wear.

Was noticble before the service, but happened between the last service (250 k) and the most recent one (260k) which was last week.

Currently running Fuchs Titan Formel 20w50 as that is the preferred oil of the workshop. Funny enough my Dakar 650 also gets Fuchs as that is what Julian at Superbike Solutions swears by. I know about Caltex Delo400 and have only heard good things about it. In googling on the Net, Delo 400 get's rated very highly.

From what i've read Fuchs is not to shabby either so I'm not to fased?

Thanks, I'll get the Vaseline so long. Going for a second opinion next week and will take it from there. The problem is the Pajero is paid off and I don't feel like buying something else and forking out the monthly premium of R2.5k plus. Hopefully I'll get away from a full re-build as you said.

@ Biggwill

I'll put that on the list as one of the things that needs to be looked at.
