hi there, a week ago, i got my pajero.
swb 3.2 diesel engine, auto transmission.
for the past week i drove 400 km, not much, but still. try to keep it on low rpm(1200 to 2000), wont go above 100 kph.
my friends, and others, said i need to run it about 1500 2000 kilometers, so the engine will "get settle", dont drag anything, keep it light, and after 2000, you can push it.
what do you say guys, from your wide expiriance, is it the best way to go?
also when the engine is cold, when i get it started, i leave it to idle for 1 minute, is it neccesery i todays engines?(the car's manual suggest to drive right away, to conserve fuel.) cause i feel it does.
do you have anymore tips for me, n how to keep the engine strong and well, for the long run?
hope i'm not bothering you with those "newbie" questiones, i just wanna know how to treat my vehicle, the best i can.
all the best guys.
what? nothing? thanks aot guys.
but maybe, in a simple manner, can you advice me on how to break-in my pajero's engine?
it's a diesel, if you have tips, id'e love to know them.
thanks

maybe you got nothing as these engines last a long time anyway.
delo 400 oil change every 10'000km with oil filter
diesel filter and air filter change every second/third oil change depending on driving conditions
block the egr - optional
200ml 2SO per tank of diesel - optional
your engine will last a long time - see this thread - mimmo has nearly done 660'000km on the engine without hassle.

I can't comment on run in of engine as my engine was just finished with its run in process when I got it at 80000km
.
I will however comment that I would not let it idle to warm up, except in extreme cold maybe, just to get the diesel more liqued/flowable. Start up and drive off.
Just dont let the engine labour. This not only means to keep the revs low and not over rev, too low almost put more strain on the engine, so keep it where you can hear it run 'easily'. Luckily with the auto that choice is done for you.
I jus drive, but I have long since understood that this is a big 4x4 diesel and not a F1 racing car and so I treat it as that.
CATS
250 000km at the next service

You should only "worry" about those things you have control over.
What kills a diesel (especially TDs)?
Preventive maintenance and appropriate driving style will take you a long way.
You can't prevent failures not associated with the above, so don't worry about it!
PS Modern engines don't need running in, (not like on old engines)

- Combustion chamber heat (EGT)
- engine cooling (lack of)
- bad lubrication
- bad diesel

What is the advantage of blocking the EGR?4ePikanini wrote:maybe you got nothing as these engines last a long time anyway.

if the egr works fine (which is usually only the first 60'000kms - 100'000km) it helps reduce NOx gases and helps fuel consumption but after that it has gunked up the intake, combustion chamber and exhaust valves causing funny idle and running issues.

look into the engine bay and just on the right of the engine cover is a brass type circular thing with a black rubber pipe going into it.JohanV wrote:4ePikanini wrote:if the egr works fine (which is usually only the first 60'000kms - 100'000km) it helps reduce NOx gases and helps fuel consumption but after that it has gunked up the intake, combustion chamber and exhaust valves causing funny idle and running issues.me that knows not much....
where does one start looking for the EGR and whats the process involved to block it off?
Just pull the black pipe off and block the rubber pipe with a golf tee and tie it away with a cable tie.
Be careful not to block the throttle butterfly that works on the same principle.
