Gen 3 3.2 Did Preventative Maintenance
Hi all,

I need some wisdom with my Did currently on 220 000km. I searched this forum and Ozzy ones for componenents with a higher incidence of failure (or then more serious consequences in the event of a failure).

I recently (December 2010, while on holiday) had my clutch and dual mass flywheel replaced at 22K at the dealers. Didn't give me much warning and failed. Further cost me a couple days of my holiday, 200k's on a flat bed and a few gray hair. I would like to prevent something similar as far as possible, but should still make sense financially.

Two months later my starter had to be replaced (fortunately gave me warning this time). I had a reconditioned unit fitted by the dealers for +- R5k.

My paj has a "oil sweat ?" on the tappet cover gasket which is due for replacement at the next service (now). I thought of having the tappets checked and adjusted if nescessary and the timing chain top guide replaced. How far do I go - do I replace the chain and tensioners or only if any problems show up on inspection ? What about the other 2 timing chain guides ? (according to dealer 12 hours labour to get to, according to Malcolm in Maitland about 6 hours :?: )

Then on the cooling side - what do I do ? I read about replacing thermostat, radiator cap, heater pipe T pieces. Is it nescessary to replace rubber hoses preventatively or only on inspection ? Which ones is most important ? Do I replace a water pump preventatively ?

I recently replaced all aircon and alternator belts, but see some people recommend replacing pulleys as well. Do I replace pulleys / bearings or only if noisy ?

The much discussed oil pressure switch ?

Heat sender unit ?

Is there anything else that I should have a serious look at at this mileage ?

Current plan is to do the tappet cover gasket, top guide etc. first.

Any advice ?

Thanks,
Wessel

Re: Gen 3 3.2 Did Preventative Maintenance
I am standing on 240000km currently and recently had to replace a diesel pipe that started leaking diesel. It gave notice from the diesel smell and did not fail, but I replaced all the diesel hoses at the same time for preventative measure. I also had the top and bottom radiator hoses replaced recently as preventative measure as they felt a bit dodgy. My starter is still good and I have yet to do the termostat. I seem to have a faulty 4x4 switch/valve actuator after my last trip with the 4x4 lights flashing which will get attention at the service on Monday. I had the top timing chain guide replaced some time ago and also did the chain itself although I think this was not needed as the chain looked brand new. My oil sender switch started leaking long time ago and was replaced at that time.

Do you have the upgraded rear sideshafts fitted? As they can also give hassles in some vehicles.

I also believe in having the injectors and pump settings checked every 100 000km.

Other than that I would say there is not much else that one can do except make sure that things like shocks are still in good condition.
