Hi Guys,
My 3.5 uses water and I can not trace any leakage anywhere. What I did notice is a lot of rusty water in the filler bottle even with relatively new water and coolant. I also noticed somewhat of a water flow out of the exhaust even when hot.
Could there be a faulty head gasket maybe? or is there somewhere else to look ? I have no water in the oil though.
Kind Regards
It is normal for a little water from the exhaust as the condensation of vapour sees to that. On a different note there would not always be water in the oil if you have blown a cylinder head gasket. It is quite possible to blow between compression and a water port without going in to an oil channel. There is a dye that can be added to the water that will change colour if it comes in to contact with combustion gasses. It might be a good thing to do a pressure test on your cooling system.

The pressure test referred to by Henk is done at the radiator - workshops, and should be free, and gives you a good indication of pressure build-up in the cooling system.
Look here for a suggestion to self-test whether air is pressed into your cooling system. If you have a gasket leak between pressure chamber and cooling system (head gasket), air pressure builds up in the cooling system, which will force water out of the cooling system into the reservoir, and it will overflow from there, causing a loss of coolant. You may also find that the radiator (or elsewhere, eg. water pipes) starts to leak if it gives in under pressure. Typically you would repair it, only to find it goes elsewhere again...
Hope you get sorted!

I have the same problem with coolant dissapearing. Just came back from Silveron Radiators where they did a pressure test. There was no loss of pressure in the system. I'll take it back tomorrow so they can open the radiator to check for blocks and also do the chemical test to check the head gasket.
Now the big question: What is the cost of replacing a head gasket on the 3.5 V6? Any other damage to check for?

Thanks for the tips guys I will test home test first and then Silverton for rest.
I was thinking anyway to have head taken off and completely redone with new type of lifters included. The ones with the bigger holes in.
I will post outcome of home test once completed.
I will have to finish rear wheel bearings first though.
Pierreandre I am going to do head thing myself even if it takes three times longer than workshop. With a torque wrench and a manual not much can go wrong. The trick is actually to match the timing marks on cams and cranck but when that is sorted the rest should be easy going.

Rusty water in the expansion tank> loss of coolant no leaks> water out exhaust when hot i would guess you might have a porous head
Mine is at Silverton Radiators at the moment. Pressure test revealed no leaks and chemical test was negative for head gasket leak. They're opening the radiator now to clean it and check for possible causes. They seem to be a bit stumped as to where the water is going.
Can't they build you a top from brass or something?pierreandre wrote:Just got a call from Silverton. There is a hairline crack in the plastic reservoir on top of the radiator. They cannot find a replacement, so I have to find a new radiator now.
Good morning to all.
I also experienced loss of coolant - signs were the plumes of white smoke(loots) when starting up in the morning. So of I went and had the heads redone(skim, valves stems etc & had the cams grinded as they were pitted) The heads were also pressure tested and were pronounced fit for duty. After all this the whole was reassembled by the workshop but the problem, white smoke from the exhaust still persists. No traces of water to be found in the oil. The inlet manifold pasages seem to be dry. Where can the water be coming from that is being blown out of the exhaust? The workshop has now again taken off the heads but still cannot see the problem? Model 1999 swb Pajero v6 3000 petrol. We are at our wits ends any all suggestions will be appreciated as we have checked out all the logical ones
Tks
