3.5 HEAD GASKET, LIFTERS, VALVE STEM SEALS
Hi Guys,

My 3.5 baby has been irritating me with lifter nois even though i have done the Delo 400 job. Lately i have been losing coolant. Have redone the radiator and repaired one small leak, no joy. Does not loose pressure on pressure test, head test does not indicate gasket problems, no water in oil etc. New radiator cap.

Oil consumption minimal, but blue smoke when idling- valve stem seals.

So this afternoon we will strip and start from head gaskets, new valve stem seals, new water pump and hoses if needed, especially those behind the motor, cambelt etc. Fortunately i have the prvate services of a very good mechanic!

My question is, can i service the lifters as described by mitshu or should i buy new lifters- very expensive?

The head will be done by an egineering shop (skim, pressure test, valve seats and seals)

Car has now done 297 000 km's, so i gues its time for some tlc?

if you have the means then replace the lifters and be done with it. Other than that have a look if it's the big or small hole lifters.

If it's the big ones then try the service. If it's the small ones then steal some money to replace them.

Have you tried the rev procedure?

Thanx Marius.

Yes i have tried it, not sure what is happening. Sometimes on cold start, there is rattle, sometimes not. When hot and i accellerate to around 3000 refs, it will go away, but as soon as decellerate and run against decompression, the rattle is back? It is intermittent.

Most probably the small hole, still original.

You can try Alert Parts for the lifters, see this post:

Re: 3.5 HEAD GASKET, LIFTERS, VALVE STEM SEALS
Hi Guys,
Just wondering about two things here.
The aftermarket waterpump_ As referred to previously - how does it compare to quality against origanal Mitsu one?
And second? the aftermarket lifters from Alert -how does this compare to OE part?
Your views please?
Thanks
Kind Regards

Ok we stripped the heads off and they are now at the engineering shop.

I now need to start shopping for spares and like to start with the heater hoses at the back of the motor. Where can i get a diagram with part numbers so that i can go to the dealers and order the hoses. The diagram that they give me differ from what i see in my engine bay? They just comment that that is the right diagram according to my vin number!

Nicomar,
Just some advice on buying at Mitsu. I also have 3.5 99 Blister Fender and my experience was that at some point in change over from Ford the parts list according to Vin Number or engine number which will be either V25 W or V24 W you might find some incorrect spares. I have have found some parts under V24 W for my car and some in V25W.
I do not know where you stay but I have experienced the guys at Brooklynne knows almost exactly what it is you need and I have all my front suspension parts as well as seals and bearings 100% correctly supplied the first time. Strangely enough almost every part I buy at Mitsu in Secunda is almost always wrong and it always ends in delays in my repair schedule.
Kind Regards

take the old ones to midas or autozone and see if they can get a match from a different vehicle - failing that, take the old hose to the dealer. The dealer may prove to be cheaper anyway!

Hi Guys, update report.

The heads has been pressure tested, skimmed and valves seated, new cam seals, valve stem seals and new lifters (big hole), all by engineering shop. All other parts ordered will clean everything tomorrow and then start assembling, replacing all water pipes etc.

Glad i have a good mechanic to do this for me privately!!! :D :)
