Hi Guys,
I recently bought my SWB 97 3,0 V6 after being in flat cars for too long. Wow! What a treat. Its in great condition ex and interior, but has 200000km's on. The power is great, and consumption around 7,5km / liter. But I have noticed "Monsterkie" is smoking - just the first instance when you give him a good rev. I dig the vehicle so much I have been considering replacing the engine with a Japanese import of 60 - 80k on the engine and it will cost around R15000.This enquiry was done in JHB and I live in CT. Does anyone know of a reputable importer of the 6G72 distributor engines in Cape Town. Do you guys think this to be a good move?
Thanks in advance
The bottom end of the 6g72 is about bullet proof and at 200k you have a lot of mileage left in the motor. I changed mine at 280k because of head damage and cost of head repairs and the bottom end was still within factory specs.
The puff of smoke is probably due to a rich mixture when revving the engine unloaded and unless you have low compression and heavy fuel consumption I would leave well enough alone. The import motor has a higher compression ratio and slightly more power than the one used in the pajero, pushing around 125 kw.
To do the replacement you would have to use your old sump and manifolds as the imports are from front wheel drive vehicles. It is a worthwhile exercise if your motor is really shot

Thanks Henk, much appreciated!
I will check the mixture etc. If the valves are not seating anymore, will this be a costly repair?

Valves not seating was never one of the regular problems of the mitsu v6 and my 280k old motor had compression within factory spec untill its dying day.
What killed my motor was a heater pipe popped and I lost coolant. After stopping I thought that it was a overheating problem caused by pushing it too hard with aircon and 45deg outside temp, I looked for an obvious failure but it was hidden behind the engine and I assumed it was nothing other than a faulty sensor. 20 Km later I had blown the head gasget and managed to warp the heads, the rocker shaft was also badly worn due to the previous owner not using a decent oil and needed replacement. With the cost of repairing the heads at double that of a replacement motor and the heads having to be skimmed to max made it an easy choice for me.
Do a compression test and if the difference between the highest and lowest reading is more than 10% of the average then start thinking about further options, otherwise give it a decent service and good oil and enjoy her
