Pajero V6 3000 problems

Hello,
My name is Roly, and I own a 1993 Mitsubishi Pajero V6 3000 12v.
I bought the car just 2 months ago, and because it was smoking badly(blue smoke every morning), I replaced the valves, valve seals/guides, timing belt and tensioner, water pump, spark plugs, all the gluids, and gaskets.
Today the car developed a ticking noise, like a lifter noise, but it sometimes disseapears.
Second and most annoying problem is that the idle has gone crazy.
As you start the engine it sits for 1 second at 8-900rpm then drops then goes back again and then stalls.
Any ideeas?
This is my little pajero:

Your idle problem is probably an idle control valve that is FUBAR or less likely a MAF sensor

I cleaned the idle control valve, with no result :(
How can I tell wich one of the two has to be replaced?
Can I test the Air Flow Meter?
I am curently using Eneos 10w-40 oil, could that have anything to do with the ticking?
thanks for the previous fast reply

Hi Roly,

I had a similar problem with my 3.0 V6. Unplug the MAF sensor and see what the idling does. If it is fine then you need to replace the MAF sensor. I got a perfect 2nd hand one on ebay(from USA) for only 60USdollar, including postage to SA. It sounds as if it's perfect to drive with the MAF sensor unplugged, but beware: It's VERY thirsty like that!
With regards to the lifter noise that you hear, member 4epikanini had really good write-ups and tips on this matter on the forum. (Hope you don't mind 4e!?)

Hello guys,
I replaced the MAF today with a used one and the car just runs great.
The idle is great.
Regading the lifter noise, I used Liqui-Moly Hydrostossel-Additive and 200ml of extra oil.
In less than 10 minutes the lifter noise dissapeared completly, and the engine started running smooth as silk.
But gues what?
I realised that the ABS PUMP/module was running continuously.
I had to unplug it, because even with the key removed from the ignition it wouldn't stop. :o

Hi, I've been told the 3.0 V6 is virtually indestructable, thats one of the reasons I bought one.. But mine is a '94, seems to be purring like a puddietat, but when should I worry?

I honestly believe that engine will make a million kilos if looked after.

It's the other stuff thatfail and kill the motor like bad services, bad cooling system leading to overheating, burst waterpipes etc.

A little update on the car.
Meanwhile I changed the clutch kit, also the master and slave cylinders.
Instaled a snorkel and a new O2 sensor.
This is how the car looks like:

But the idle problem causes me to go nuts.
I've replaced 2 more MAF sensors, 1 ICV, distributor cap, rotor, even put on a new ECu from the wreckers.
NOTHING!
The damn thing starts great when cold, or in the morning, it idles at 1500-2000 depending on how cold it is outside, and then when it reatches operating temperature, the rev counter may go nuts a few times, droppind and going fron 900-400 in a split second, then that stops and the revs go up to 900-1000 and stay there, but the idle is still erratic, and you can hear the exaust sound beeing normal for let's say 3-5 seconds then you can hear a sputter, and then the cycle repeats itself. It'slike a missfire.
I have no ideea what to do with it

adjust TPS

There is also idle control valve - on the throttle body - I think it's brownish grey in colour that can go out.

Other than that there is an idle adjustment screw on the throttle body on the side closest to the firewall. Turning in lowers idle and vice versa but my bet would be the idle stepper motor - they are known to go bad.
