Cambelt age

Hi all,
So I hit a flop when checking the service history of the Pajero I bought last week.
In the history it shows the Cambelt was done at 202,000km (only 37,000km ago) but I never noticed the date it was done: Dec 2007!!
No wonder the guy sold it, he sure was not using it anymore. Probably a dedicated holiday car.
Anyway - I have no reason to doubt that the belt was done, but the thing is - don't they age over time?
Should I replace due to old age?
Thanks
Pierre

Pierre,
Me being a sceptical person on these things (especially with older vehicles and their so called service record)I would suggest changing it as with the tensioner pulley .
You never know what happened to the car in that period and a broken cam belt or seized pulley can be devistating to cash flow .
Whilst you at it check your waterpump as well. Mine looked alright from outside but inside was virtually destroyed.
I bought one from Midas for R1300 odd rand . It was a GMB waterpump and putting those next to each other there was no difference in looks as well as design. The blade thickness, curvature and height was exactly the same as the old one.
It comes with all gaskets and seals.
I know it is a lot of work and probably money but will be piece of mind for the future.
