Oil level light and auto box question
Hi Guys

Hope you can shed some light

I recently had my auto transmission oil changed (at the agents), 2005 SWB DID, and immediately noticed a difference in my gear changes, not changing as quickly, seems to stay longer in a specific gear and not changing down when accelerating. Also slightly less power, but that could be my imagination.
Most recent is when I go up a hill, DEFINITELY LESS POWER and my oil level check light comes on briefly. I have checked the level when the vehicle is both warm and cold and the level appears fine.

I guess my question here is are the 2 related in anyway??? Or am I just having bad luck?

Any comments appreciated

Thanks
Re: Oil level light and auto box question
I may be wrong, but I have read somewhere here I think it was 4E Pikanini's post, about the Gearbox building up a memory ito changing over etc. And I think he mentioned something about disconnecting the battery to reset. I can be shooting in the Dark here, but I am sure someone here can maybe help with an explanation.

Good luck

Re: Oil level light and auto box question
correct.

The gearbox is intelligent and "learns" behaviour based on your driving style and the various sensors on the gearbox and engine.

The gearbox and engine ecu's talk to each other.

To start fresh, disconnect both terminals from the battery, leave for 5 minutes, let the 2 loose terminals touch each other for a second, and then connect to the battery again.

The behaviour will be different and usually notchy to start with and then improves as it "learns" your behaviour.

It uses the last 20 drives to determine driving style.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies

I have since done what you suggested, disconnected the battery after 5 minutes and "touched the terminals, will report back when I can properly test it. Funny thing though, now my headlights don't turn off when I remove the key from the ignition!

As to the oil light coming on, I spoke to the agents, they say it is a common thing, due to weather, temp and also could be due to gunk in the sump not allowing the sensor to work properly. They went on to say that so long as there is oil in the car and that the RED oil light didn't come on that I should be fine?!?!

Anyway, thanks so far for the input

Cheers

Re: Oil level light and auto box question
The oil level light (orange oil can logo) is for engine oil and most cure it with a 7-8mm overfill of engine oil on the dipstick.

The A/T oil level should be checked after a nice long drive so the fluid is warm, then put the car in "P" (and engine running) after going through all the selections for a few seconds. The autobox oil level should then be at the hot mark. Not less and not more otherwise foaming could occur creating excessive heat and slippage.

Thanks

Having had the AT oil done at the agents less than a month ago, one would assume that it is correct, however assumption is the mother of all duff ups! Will have a look when I next use the vehicle for any length of time

It it not dangerous to overfill the engine oil? Engine damage??

Too much engine oil can cause crank to foam up the oil. This can lead to increased vapours in the PCV system causing gunk in the intake (especially if you still have a working EGR system) and also if the oil is foamed it means there is air in the oil and where there is air, there is no lubrication.

Ok, but as long as the amount over in minimal? as in your previous post, 7-8mm on the stock, is that "built in" human error?

Yes, I suspect minimal overfill is OK - especially in offroad conditions where the pickup might pick up some air if the level is low.

I overfilled all my previous vehicles by about 8mm and never had any issues. In fact it kept the lifters quiet on my gen2 pajero 3.0 v6

Intresting to read about the autobox memory.
Would mine also have that or is it only the new models?
