I need all the cleaver people input now.
Had the PJ at a Diesel Electric work shop, they picked up fault codes but cant say what it is.
Can anyone please help to direct me into where these errors and problems are on the PJ and maybe how to fix it?
Fault codes:
001 - 31 - CAN COMM
002 - 52 - VGT CONT. PRS
003 - 51 - EGR POS.SNSR

I only know about this one. How many km do you have the Pajero and have you replaced or experiencing problems with your flywheel being a manual

The problem with just having the fault codes are that you don't know from which ECU it was read. The pajero has a different ECU and set of fault codes for the the engine, transmission, ABS etc. Each of these are located in a different section of the workshop manual. Its quite a mission to find them.
I checked the engine ecu fault codes (section 13c), but I don't see any of the codes you have there. I will have a look at the other sections to see if there's anything I can find.

I havent had any trouble yet with the gearbox or fly wheel since i had it. PJ got 239000km on the clock.
Some issues i have with the Pajero.
1. First start in the mornings, Turn key to on and Heat gauge will already be in the middle or shoot straight past the read line to the top. While you drive, heat gauge will look more like a rev counter. or settle just below horizontal in normal position. Heat sensor, Radiator cap, thermostat all replace before problem still persisting. since February.
I have ordered a new PC Cluster board and should fit it in 3weeks when part arrive. (The same happened to the Automatic Pajero we had, Heat gauge = Rev counter. New PC cluster fixed problem)
2. Major problem we have with my PJ is that if so often happens 100% of the time first time start in the mornings.
In the afternoons or when its hot day, the PJ refuse to start maybe 2 out of 10 times. specially just after a trip lets say to town , stop at home pick some stuff up, need to drive again and then.... Turn key to on, All Lights on Dash light up as suppose to, engine light goes out, turn key and nothing. no sound not even a click. Leave the PJ for 20min or so, turn the key and Wroem Wroem of you go.
We added a relay directly to the starter, now also same as above, when you turn the key the starter will turn but the engine will not turn over and start. leave 15 to 20min, turn key and wroem wroem.
still baffled with this gremlin, i dont know if the PC Cluster will solve this non starting issue also, so we had them do the diagnostics this morning and that was the errors it reports

Check the negative battery clamp on your second problem. My 2001 model and probably yours as well has a lead clamp and the - cable is "fused" directly into it, making it difficult to replace just the clamp with an off the shelf clamp. This clamp, due to the softness of lead, stretch over years and the bolt does not manage to clamp it as tightly as it should be. Even if just a little bit loose there will not be enough current flowing to get that BIG 3.2 4 pot diesel going. You need to clean it and saw a portion out of the clamp beak part to enable it to clamp tightly again and also possibly replace the bolt with ones where the grooves are not filled with lead over the years, stopping you from tightening it as it should be.
Maybe this is your problem. The only reason why it could possibly not be your problem is due to the fact that it doesn't happen everytime, which is always a problem to diagnose.

Its rather annoying at most, as you said, it doesn't do it regularly. now for two days it didn't do it, then when its the most inconvenient time.. then the gremlin will stick out its head.
It so happened that we called someone on call out to come look twice before. So you can imagine me looking the fool when i said "this is what it does" i turned the key and the PJ started like nothing was wrong.
Its rather annoying at most, as you said, it doesn't do it regularly. now for two days it didn't do it, then when its the most inconvenient time.. then the gremlin will stick out its head.

Next time when it does it open the bonnet and try to fiddle the negative(Black) clamp a bit and then get in and try to start again. Maybe, you never know. I have had this on two different Pajeros of much the same age.JohanV wrote:Thanks, anything at this stage.

The ECUs interpret very low voltages and small changes in voltage as well.
Even a 'small' error would put the ECU in a state of "shock" !
I had a similar problem. Thought the battery was flat/dead. Tried to jump-start - nada.
Tried to charge the battery in-situ with nice thick cables from another Pajero - nada.
Disconnected the terminals, cleaned them properly and re-fitted - started immediately, and problem has not happened since (±3 years).
Even a 'small' error would put the ECU in a state of "shock" !

The advice sofar is obviously sound, but may I add our experience as well?
On a 3.5 Blister, a lifetime ago, we had battery/charging related gremlins. Problem turned out to be a dirty battery. A very thin conductive layer (in an otherwise clean engine bay
)had formed on the top of the battery. Boiling water and a clean cloth to wipe it off nicely was all that was required.
