Hi Guys, Im in need of help. My Paj lost power while driving tonight and the engine check light came on. Can i read out the error codes without a scan tool? How? any ideas what the problem might be?
Thanks Wilddog

Wilddog,
I'm not aware of a trick (like on some Jeeps) where you can get the error codes to appear on screen.
I recommend you take it to a dealer for a scan. Did you at least do a general check for the obvious things like water in the diesel filter trap?
Were there any strange symptoms before of after the incident?
Good luck man,
Roelf

Hi Guys,
An update and final solution for my problem.
Using the information posted by 4ePikanni. I retrieved the fault codes from the engine ECU code 25 and 43. Both codes related to the diesel pump piston position sensor. I checked the resistance measurements on the sensor and they checked out ok, Yet the fault codes remained. I eventually took the sensor off, which takes about an hour. Luckily you can get to it with the pump still installed. The pin connected to the sensor had sheered off. I purchased a new one through Diesel electric (the guy says he sells alot of these for Pajeros). R437.00 and no more engine light and my Paj is running like a dream again.
Hope this helps if you have a similar problem in the future.

Good news!
Imagine what the dealer would have charged you? Especially if they misdiagnosed and sent the pump off for a recon.
Glad you got it sorted.
maybe post some tips on how you got the ecu out and in?

Thanks for all your help Marius,
The Autobox and engine ECU are mounted together on the left side A-Pillar in the passenger footwell. you have to disconnect the plugs going into the ECU's and the central junction box plug (there is a black lever that must be pushed all the way down to split the plug.
There are a number of 6mm bolts holding the ecu in place and all I can say is good luck to anyone that has to do this. It was difficult to remove them and even more so to put them back. I had to eventually enlist my seven year old son to help get two of the bolts back in, my hands are just too big. it was a great exercise in bonding with him
I love my Paj and think they are way ahead of the pack when it comes to design features but I think the design of the ECU fitment borders on stupidity.
Anyway after much swearing, sweating and irritation.I did manage to get them back in, but it did take longer to refit the ECU's than it did to replace the sensor on the pump.
Hope this helps any would be ECU installers.

I prefer having the ecu tucked away. It makes it harder for crooks to steal the car and brings my insurance premium down to higher safety rating.
I have heard of some cars (appliances) that can be stolen in 60 seconds due to easy access to the ecu.

Theres another thought process that can be applied here. If its so difficult to get the ECU out and that makes the car more difficult to steal then surely you become a hi-jack risk
I live in Jo'burg

, if they want the car they will take it no matter what it takes.

Unless of course they hi-jack instead or stealing it.
