Hi everyone. Had a bit of a mishap with my fuel pump for my Pajero 3.5gls 1997. It seems that when I disconnect the fuel filter and turn the engine no fuel sprays out. Could this mean the fuel pump is faulty and can it be repaired or do I have to buy a new one. Could someone also tell me what pressure it pumps at and where would the cheapest place be to buy one.

To set the timing you must connect the brown terminal to earth and set the advance to 5 BTDC

The black connector can be connected to 12v to let the fuel pump run. Try and see if the pump works this way. maybe you have an electrical issue

Thanks 4ePikanini for the info I will definitely try this on the week end .If its an electrical problem can the pump be repaired or is it better to buy a new one.

If the wiring is faulty then trace the wire to find the fault or run a new wire from the fusebox to the pump that goes live with the ignition.

Easy thing is to put the ignition on and check for 12v at the fusebox and 12v at the fuel pump.

No 12v then trace the electrical. If you have 12v at the fuel pump ( and the fuel pump is not spinning - you will hear it if you crawl underneath ) then replace the fuel pump.

I am not sure it the test you did is a valid test as some cars will also require the engine to rotate before the pump operates. So yes switch on the ignition but also turn the starter over. Remember the electronics are sophisticated.

I can hear my Gen2 pump whirring when the ignition is in the 'ON' position.

The fuel pressure valve should take care of excess pressure.

As an added safety feature the management will not allow the pump to run while the engine is not sending any signal to the ecu. Your pump can produce up to 6 bar but the regulator cuts this down to about 2.8 depending on rpm. The best bet to test is to start the engine while the pipe is disconnected just remember to unplug the coils

Thanks to all you guys out there much appreciated for the advice.I will keep this in mind when I work on it on the week end. I was als thinking about opening the lid under the back carpet to get to the top of the tank and check if there is current at the point where the wires connect to the pump.

So last night my sons and I ran a wire straight from the battery to the fuel pump and whala we were able to start the motor .That tells me one thing .Elaectrical problem.So this weekend I will trace wiring from tank to power point and see if I can find the break.One question .Does anyone maybe have a wiring diagram or an idea how the wiring system works .This would be much appreciated.I will keep you informed of my progress.

I suggest that you check the fuses and the fuelpump relay. If you can locate the relay (normally well maked inside the relay boxes) one test would be to listen for a pick. If it does pick it may be that the contacts are burnt and although it may pick it does not make proper contact. Sorry cant help with diagram for this model.
