3.2 Did - Engine stopped

I just had the fright of my life. I have just done 240000 km on my 3.2 DiD and today I had the first problem ever. When driving home, suddenly the rev counter started to move up and down (+- 300 revs) and then the engine just stopped. I pulled over and re-started the engine after about a minute, first there was thick smoke coming from the exhaust, the engine ran very rough, and after about 5 seconds the smoke cleared and it ran like nothing has ever been wrong.
Anyone with any ideas what this could have been.
Thanks
Harald

it's one (or both) of the speed sensors on the pump.
one of them's part number is ME203180

Marius, you were right. The stealers put the computer on and confirmed the speed sensor on the pump to be defect.
I ordered the part on the 29th of December and it arrived on the 16th of January. Had it fitted today, she was taken for a test drive by the service advisor of Rola in Somerset West and handed over to me. I drove not even 500m and the engine management light came on. Return to the stealers and was told that this was to be expected, the pump will need to be overhauled - this can only be done in JHB. I was boiling and could not even answer, so just drove off.
This is my only car and to send the pump from the Cape to JHB to be reconditioned, leaves me stranded for 2 to 3 weeks. I am at my wits end.
Does anyone know of a trustworthy Mitsu workshop in Capetown or the winelands. I am living in Hermanus.
Not sure what to think but in no mood to go back to the same stealer.
Can I still use the car with the ECU light on, she drives fine.
Anyone with ideas or advise?
Thanks
Harald

have it scanned again to see what error comes up now.

I find it hard to believe that the pump needs an overhaul if it's running fine - albeit the CEL is on.
If they overhaul the pump and that's not the issue, who's gonna foot the bill?

Let's get the facts in a line:
- You drove it from 29th Dec to 16th Jan without any problem.
- The dealer fits a new sensor (based on their diagnosis).
- The dealer takes it for a test drive, and is satisfied, so he hands it over to you.
- You drive it for 500m and it has a problem!
- The dealer states that the pump needs over-hauling.
You may believe this, but I don't.

Thanks to all of you for your comments and suggestions.
I, can not believe that there is a major problem (and I hope I am right), as my old trusty Paj is running absolutely fine.
I have found over the last 2 days, that the EC light comes on when idling. Yesterday I drove about 20 km in total and the light was not on at all. Today, I stopped and when the revs were down, suddenly the light came on. Idle speed is still at about 800rpm, so seems normal.
I'll have to try and get to Cape Town next week, work allowing, to find someone that can read the error properly.
Thanks again for your input, will keep you posted of the results.

i had that light ocming on intermittently. only say for a minute or two at a time and sometimes only once a month. took it to the dealers to check on the diagnostic machine. they couldn't pin point anything and told me to drive until it stayed on and they would check it again. before that happened my no.1 piston cracked. turned out my EGR pipe was very blocked up with carbon etc and had also affected something else to do with the intake of air into the engine.
i would get that checked if you can. the 4e's will probably be bale to provide better technical terms to describe what I am talking about.
m2c is don't just ignore it. that light is definitely coming on for a reason.

if the engine light came on and went off it will still be stored in the memory. have it scanned or try and read it via my DIY
