3 Provinces Battlefield Trophy
Volksrust
27th of April to 1st May 2012
What is it all about?
4×4 event for the whole family, themed around the Anglo-Boer wars that took place in and around the town of Volksrust in Mpumalanga.
At the start each team (consisting of a 4×4, driver, navigator, and optional passengers) receive a route schedule (more about this later), which they have to use to navigate a predetermined route consisting of anything from tar roads right down to barely visible off-road tracks.
As the teams navigate the routes at their own pace, they are taken to numerous historical places of interest in the Volksrust region dating from the Anglo-Boer wars fought between 1880-1881 and 1899-1902.
Along these routes we’ve placed certain activity points where teams have to complete fun and challenging tasks for points. Some of these activities may be as easy as filling in a questionnaire or riding a camel! More challenging tasks include shooting an old muzzle-loader, clay pigeon shooting or canoeing.
Routes and Terrain.
The routes consist of public tar roads, public and private gravel roads and 4×4 trails and obstacles, literally taking teams through 3 provinces, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.
you get to drive on roads and trails not accessible to the public
The 4×4 sections are grade 2 – 4, and may go up to 5 in wet weather. The terrain includes mud, loose gravel, rocks, steep inclines and declines and maybe even river crossings! The 4×4 trails contain only natural obstacles and may change over time. Some 4×4 driving experience or formal 4×4 training is required.
Officials are placed at the most difficult sections to assist teams through the obstacles.
Route Schedule.
The route schedule is inspired by those used in regularity rallies, with one major difference! No times or speeds are stipulated! This means teams drive entirely at their own pace! Remember this is not a rally.
Distances vary between 80km and 120km per day
What do I need to enter?
• A 4×4 vehicle with low range and good ground clearance.
• A driver and navigator. Passengers are allowed. (National traffic regulations apply)
• Some 4×4 driving experience or formal 4×4 training.
• A sense of adventure, with a slice of competiveness and enthusiasm!
• New this year! You’ll also need a digital camera! (Don’t worry you don’t need the most expensive! Even a cell-phone camera will do as long as we can download your photos from a memory card.
Fundraiser.
The Battlefield Trophy is organised by the owners of 3 Provinces 4×4 Adventures and Adrenaline Weekend 4×4 Toere, as a fundraising event for the Amajuba Private School in Volksrust. Last year, thanks to 30 teams entering, we’ve been able to donate more than a whopping R24000! We hope to increase the amount again this year!
