Mad consumption
Hi all

My mate bought a 2008 3.2 DI-D swb, 144 000 km on the clock, very impressed with the car until the first tank was empty at about 440km, we took the paj to brooklynn mitsu and they had it for about 2 days, they told us nothing wrong with the paj fuel consumption looks good all fine.

Week later 430 km tank emty :!: ,he then phoned the previous owner, which also told him that thats the normal consumption of the paj since new, he then took the paj to dastek, the bloke at dastek told him the best thing to do is to install a unichip, which he then did, next tank 440 km.

We took the paj to midrand mitsu, 4 hours later the guy phoned back and said the paj took toooo long to shift gears and thats the main reason for his problem they changed gearshift settings at no cost, you can feel quicker gearshifts now. it has now been 2 weeks later the paj went to mosselbay and back, the best consumption on one tank @ 125km/h 490 km, my paj @ 125km/h 750 km.

He phoned freek at mitspro explained the problem to freek, freek gave him the advice to make sure that when he drives, he must take the revs up to 2500rpm before the car shifts gears, he also explained to him that the gearbox will adapt to his driving style because presently the paj shifts at 2000rpm and when shifting on that rpms the paj will be heavy on juice. now i took the paj for 1 tank dubble cheked the rpms and the gearbox to shift @ 2500rpm, Still no change in consumption.

I know my 2004 swb 3.2 is a manual, but can a auto 3.2 DI-D swb give a consumption like this!, the next thing is to totaly replace the injectors, as we all know this is not a cheap uitstapie.

Can anyone help regarding this problem?

Re: Mad consumption
Piri,

Can you please tell us how many litres of diesel goes in after a 400-odd km run.

Is it not something really stupid like a fuel gauge indicating "empty" way too early?

What consumption does the onboard computer show?

Does the car smoke to suggest over fueling?

Re: Mad consumption
Hi Roelf

when i tested his paj, on 440km the light came on, at 510 km i heared a nock in the engine  my friends workshop towed the car in, after a while the mechanic phoned me and said there was no diesel and the fuel line was the cause of the nock that sounded like a engine nock, there is no smoke behind the paj only when you drive it realy hard but thats obvious, the fuel gage shows between 17 and 19 litres/km constant on 120kmh

Re: Mad consumption
a set of injectors is about R6k from the dealers for the non common rail version.

I would suggest to do the following

- have a compression check done to eliminate a faulty piston
- delete the CAT
- have the boost checked
- scan for error codes

I'm also struggling with consumption but not as bad as that yet.

Also check the amount of fuel that goes in when filling and compare to the kilometers covered.

What size tyres are you running on it?

Re: Mad consumption
Hi Piri,

Just a thought - does the vehicle have oversize tyres perhaps?
I have read that with the auto box and oversize tyres you can easily get to the point where the autobox never/rarely locks up so there is always slip.

Using a light right foot (probably cruise closer to 105 than 125k/h) my old and overweight (too many accessories) 2002 Di-D Auto LWB averages about 14l/100km (lots of town driving) and can give me 12l/100km on mixed use (on tar + gravel + sand) trips carrying 200l fuel, fridge etc. And Marius consumption looks about the same.

Re: Mad consumption
Hi Marius

already did the cat 2000 km back, tire size 265/75/17 HT tires he is not a big offroader yet, they did a full diagnostic at mitsu and they tested injectors, tubo boost etc and a dynotune after the chip, if i remember correct before chip 121kw 373nm
after 144kw 440 nm.

Re: Mad consumption
EDIT : I see mitsubihi motors lists the gen4 tyres as 265/65R17

That means a difference of 6.8%
tyre comparison.jpg
The odometer difference may not be much but the taller gearing affects the torque to the wheels and the torque converter lock up and essentially makes the engine work harder.
