I think im in trouble (is my HG gone?)

hi guys i was out of the country and upon my return catched up with my forum reading and if you check my other posts my truck has power issues and hates even the smallest hills. it looses power and to overtake i need a loooong stretch of tar or have to kick down the gearbox to 2 or L. by the way its a 4m40 swb gen 2 jap import.

i was reading on the condom hg test and i did it. please check the pictures. my radiator top has some brown sandy like paste around it. the water (yes water, i removed the thermostat as it was faulty and topped with water planning a full service this week) is browny as if it had been mixed with sand.

please tell me if my hg is gone or not. if its gone will it mean that its loosing power and drink fuel because of it?

what are the adverse effects of a gone hg?

lastly, how much does a HG cost and who are the suggested retailers in mpumalanga (nelspruit, malelane and komatipoort?)

how much does a thermostat cost or can i keep running wothout one? by the way i live in moz and i removed the thermo because once my wife took my car out and overheated it to the point that it blew a water pipe!!!

Looks like the HG is gone. That is the good news. The bad news is that the 4m40 is famous for cracking the head if it's overheated so you will probably have to look for a new head as well.

On top of that you will have to figure out why it overheated and blew the HG. By the looks of things your cooling system is blocked with rust and dirt particles.

As part of the head replacement you will have to have the entire system cleaned and flushed (including the heater matrix) and more than likely have the radiator recored.

thanks for the replies. my brother in law and my auto electrician seems to think its not gone as he came for a visit and checked the car. hes reasoning is that if the hg was gone it would be throwing out water from the radiator cap. he told me that the brown foamy stuff is because i was running without anti freeze.
is this true?

well the beast overheated because the thermostat failed and wasnt opening.

this failure is aparentlly common as i was told that most jap import 4m40 are running around without a thermostat.

there are even stories of them failing in the 1st 500 km of getting them from either durbs or the maputo harbour. what do i make of this??

more importantly do midas/autozone stock the head gasket/heads themselves and at what cost? or should i just say bolocks and get a new engine? i reckon a second hand engine will cost me around R12k.

how much does the 3.2 did cost? is the transplant troublesome? 4e i know your dad put one into a gen1 but my gen2 is automatic. are there major diferences?

thanks again guys. i really need to sort out my ride as im going outof the country again very soon.

I think your head gasket is history, but it is a result, not a cause.
Experience says the head is cracked, and needs replacement, because they cannot be machined.

The Di-D transplant is expensive and difficult (electronically).
I did it for different reasons to your's.

I recommend you replace the head and upgrade the radiator.
(and use proper coolant -water is not good enough!)

Hi Just went through this exercise, head gaskets from Midas and cylinder head from Components for Africa (Krugersdorp) Total cost, labour and parts, was just under R 11k. About 3 months later, I burnt a hole in one of the pistons. Another R 8k + R 13k for the diesel pump service. In retrospect I should have opted for the Lexus V8 transplant as per Ernie https://www.pajeroclub.co.za/forum/view ... =31&t=3816

Seems to be the cheaper route in the long run.

at that money i rather get a used engine. works out much cheaper... ill check that V8 route. seems bad but just puts a smile on my face... oh damn the power... but is it feasible for a daily drive? im thinking about the juice cost...
