Can you hill start / pull start a 3.2 DiD - manual?

Hi - I am having starter motor problems which will hopefully be sorted out tomorrow. It the meantime I though I would see if I could at least hill start the beast.
To clarify no voltage problems - battery lots of life - starter just doesn't have enough power to get it past first firing.
So in anticipation of tomorrows tow in I thought I would try a hill start to avoid this - got up to about 40 in second and dropped the clutch. Revs definitely high enough but engine didn't fire and all I got for my effort was the engine fault light coming on. To my relief it disappeared a few minutes later.
So question is : can you actually tow / hill start a manual gen 3 DiD - if so how/ what did I do wrong ?
Thanx Tim
