Engine light

Hi Guys
I was wondering if there is anyone that can shed some light on this problem.
I bought a Gen4 3.2 DiDc SWB two weeks ago in Pretoria. On my way back home to the Western Cape, at Upington, the engine light comes on. Fortunately as it was a Saturday, I was just in time to find someone at the agents. He phoned a mechanis and was told that it was ok if I carried on driving, as long as I felt that the power was still there and the car was pulling fine.
I drove on to Springbok, where I spent the night. Next morning when I started up, the engine light was not on anymore. Much to my relief. I drove home.
Two day later on starting the car, the engine light comes back on. I made an appointment with the agents to have it seen to for next week. Two days later the light goes off.
This on/off story is freaking my mind.
Is there someone that can help, please!! Thanks for your time.
