I have booked some accomodation many moons ago to go search for some snow in Lesotho, seems like I am doing this every year so maybe next year I must organize club event? I am staying close to Fouriesburg and plan to go snow hunting up to Afriski over the weekend some time.
Anyway, seems like I picked my weather perfect!!
Anybody else heading that direction over the weekend?
Will post some pics and short trip report when I get back.

From what I see in the news, you might just spend your weekend in Fouriesburg!
How exciting!
The Eastern Cape mountain areas (Barkley East, Rhodes, Lady Grey) might just be a safer option?
If you venture into Lesotho, prepare as if you KNOW you will be stuck for 4 days:
- Make sure people not going with you have your location at all times (load and activate Google Latitude on your cell phone!) If not Latitude, SMS your location every 30mins.
- Diesel additive (against jelling).
- Full tank of diesel.
- Borrow snow chains, if you don't have any.
- Food and drink for 4 days.
- Toiletries especially bog rolls!
- Pot/pan/dixie that will sit on exhaust manifold to warm water / melt snow, for washing, cooking etc.
- Cell phone chargers.
- GPS.
- Warm clothes.
- Blankets.
- Fire wood.
- Gas stove.
- First aid kit.
- Flares.
Read the Christo Davids report on the snow rescue in Lesotho last month.

http://www.afriski.net/#/weather
Gives info on access to Afriski. If stuck in Fouriesburg, go to Clarens, nice things to see and do there or Didibeng/ Meiringskloof trail @ Fouriesburg.
Enjoy!

Thanks Gerhard
I have all those items ticked except the dixie pan. Will get that. Also have satphone so will let you know if we need more Pajero's but I am not looking at taking chances and will not try to do anything silly. Only have one set of snow chains, best to put them front or rear? I would say front as it might help more with steering control?
If the weather determine that we stay put in Fouriesburg then it will have to do. I have seen how quickly snow fun can turn into disaster very fast so we will take all precautions. The weather predictions for later in the weekend predict sunny weather on Thursday-Saturday, so I think we should be OK. We only plan to go in on Friday or Saturday. But yes. We will be prepared for staying put for a few days if stuck.
Cheers

Hi CATS,
Maybe a snow expedition next year?
Although this is the time of year I try to go further afield.
Enjoy your trip and don't forget we need photos.

Hey Christo
See you on the slopes:):):)
Were only heading out of JHB on Sunday. When you coming back?
Re diesel additive, I got Wynns Diesel. Spoke to their technical manager and its supposed to be good for -15°C
Passes all closed at the moment, but plans are underway to open them by Friday:):):)
Cheers
Kai

Sounds lekker, had good timing 4 years back like this, hope you have a great trip, and not snowed in. I tip we learnt that when ice on road and need traction, course salt works wonders.
Cheers
David

Feedback time!
Got lots of snow and our timing was PERFECT! We had a safe journey to Afriski on the Friday and the pass was open and no ice on the road with beautiful sunny cloudless and windless day. Did manage to get a bit stuck when we went off road at a secret spot that I know about where we had to break some fresh snow and when two vehicles went through the tracks got compacted to slippery ice. Once the tyre chains were fitted all went well(First time I had to use them in all the years of ownership). Saturday was a bit foul with winds reaching 55km/h where we stayed, but all in all a great memorable trip! Border crossing was no hassle at all but had a bit of a que going in on Friday. Coming out was less than 10 minutes.
Also met up with Kai on the way out on Sunday and borrowed him my chains as they were on their way in to Lesotho.

CATS, that looks awesome, at least you could see the cold as well, while some of us just got to feel it
