Smoking while idling ?

Hallo Gents,

My Paj 3.2 DiD, 2005 model is giving off some smoke from the exhaust under normal working temp when idling. It also smells very rich.
I have driven behind it to see if it also smokes when pulling away, but as soon as you pull away it clears. It seems less if you shift into neutral but remain in idle ?
She has done 248 000 km without any mods !

Only regular services done by myself, every 10 000 km. I use Castrol 15W40 Diesel oil.

What can cause this ?

My vorige 2001 Paj het dieselfde gedoen, ek dink dit het iets met die EGR of cold start te doen. Dit het amper meer soos wasem gelyk maar mens kon ruik dit was diesel rook.

Ek het die Paj verkoop op 265 000 km sonder enige probleme so ek dink nie daar is iets om oor bekomerd te wees nie. Dit het maar meer te doen met die werking van die EGR en cold start volgens my.

I have exactly the same problem. Replaced injector tips but it was still there. Really irritating in the garage and sitting at traffic lights. Wondering if it is not the diesel pump sensors. Could be giving too much diesel at idle.

smoking on the 3.2 could be one, or a combination, of a few things.

overtime the pump wears and the timing becomes slightly retarded. Advancing the pump is a fairly easy and cheap fix (loosen 3 bolts & turning the casing towards the engine)

the coolant temp sensor may be broken. remember there are 2. One for the gauge and one for the ecu. If the ecu sees a cold engine it sends extra fuel. To check if the ecu coolant temp is working, get the car up to operating temp and see if the throttle flap is closed about 90% at idle and opens fully as soon as you touch the throttle pedal.

the other four reasons for smoking idle could be valve stem seals, speed sensors on the diesel pump, failing piston rings or dirty/worn injectors.

Thanks for the info. I will check the ECU temp sensor first before doing the pump sensors. Really dreading replacing those.

I have a temp sensor that came out of my Pajero, I replaced it because I thought it was an issue, but when I fitted the new one it still did the same.

You can have it for R200 if you like.

Marius, if I want to advance the pump timimg, how will I know how much to turn the casing ?

It's a fairly arduous task. Battery removal, cover removal and the rear nut is a PITA to get to.

Make amark on the pump and the timing gear cover where they meet. Turn the pump so the points shift 1mm. If it's advanced to far you will hear a terrible knock.

Today I saw exactly the same thing with mine, white smoke when Idling at operating temp.
Yesterday I disconnected the actuator for the EGR recirculation. Can there be any connotation there?
Have checked sensor valve operation as in video on this thread , works .
