It all started 2 weeks ago on my way down to the Wild Coast.
Our old lady - 1999, 3500l bubble fender, LWB, started leaking ATF fluid, around 300ml every 200km. In stead of trying to solve the issue in places like Kokstad or Lusikisiki, I decided to manage the leak until my return a week or so later, where I could have some time and decent mechanics around me in Jhb (hopefully).
On our return journey the leak got pretty bad and eventually poured 4 litres of Mitsu ATF down the throat of that little pipe. Anyway, got home ok, cleaned the engine and undercarriage to start the SherlockHolmes part. - NO OIL leak as yet, driven it, idled it, revved it, Hangaz! No oil leak. BUT
The day after I cleaned the oil off, she started missing, obviously, water got in somewhere and just needed to get it dried out. Eventually opened the coil (she has 3 coils on the left bank) and found. Bit of oil lying in there. Mmmmmmmm, removed the coils, and cleaned the oil away! Started the engine with the cover still off, and saw that the second coil arcs and sparks to the aliminuim. When it does not spark, she idles ok, but even with the revs high, she arcs and it looks like a fireworks display!
Does this mean a faulty coil, or is there some magic fix. AND secondly, any ideas where that damn oil leak on the gearbox comes from. The majority of the oil filth was on the right hand side, collecting on the plate on top of the exhaust, and dripping the, more or less around the bracketery that holds the oil cooler pipes in place........... Thought it could have been there, but found no evidence of a crack or a thin pipe or anything like that...... After all the old lady has 330000km on her dial.
Any suggestions would be welcome..
