Rattling Tappets
20 Jan 2013
Hi – have been following messages posted on the forum and have the following problem.

I own a 2000 SWB GLS – new shape Pajero. Automatic.

The engine is a 3500 V6 petrol single cam per bank, and it blew its motor for the first time in January 2010. The heads were redone, gaskets replaced and the problem solved.

The second time, also towing a caravan, was in October 2012. This time it did a really good job. There was a crack in the block, seized piston rings, head gaskets. This was all fixed and the motor started, but hydraulic tappets would not stop rattling. So all 24 tappets were replaced, but the rattle – not as bad – still persists.

I and my mechanic have come to our wits end as to what can still be done. Any help on the following two questions:

1. Why it should have blown its motor for the second time? It was serviced and cooling system checked before the 6,200 km trip. The motor blew 300 km from home on the return trip.

2. Why do the tappets still keep rattling?

Thank you. Any assistance would be appreciated. Tom

Hi there Bdb. Check the oil pressure on the engine,if its too low the lifters will make a noise, replace the oilpump .Make sure all oil holes are open. Also make sure the clearances on crank is still in spec :)

Thanks very much Dries, appreciate your input. We are looking into the oil possibilities and hope this solves our problem with the very noisy tappets. Will report back in due course. BdB

I wish more people would have the same confidence in the pajero Club forum as I do. Normally I do my research on this forum, or the 4x4community forum, and when I go the mechanic, I tell him what to do. There is more knowledge here than any mechanic can have. It saves a lot of time and money trouble shooting with a mechanic.
