Excessive fuel consumption 1998 2.8tdi
Hi All,

I recently purchased a 1998 2.8tdi SWB pajero. Comfy to drive but I have 2 what I consider major problems.
The first is that it uses a LOT of diesel. Now prior to this I drove a 2004 colt clubcab 2.8tdi and I would get about 9-9.5 litres / 100km. Im currently getting 14.5-15.5 litres / 100km. I have been using the car to and from work (100kms / day) and I dont have to sit in rush hour as I leave home at 6am and I have an empty freeway all the way to and from work. Im driving approx 100-110km/h exactly as I drove my colt.
The first thing I did after buying it was get it serviced and they informed me the turbo was 100% shot so I put in a brand new genuine turbo. She pulls better but still the same fuel consumption.
Any ideas / suggestiong?

The second issue is that when I engage low range she jumps back out into neutral. High 4 and High 4 with Diff lock are 100%. If I hold the selector shaft in low 4x4 I can drive change gears etc no problem. Im reluctant to send it in without having some kind of ideas of what may be wrong because the mechanics were honest enough to tell me they wouldnt be sure what it could be and indicated its not the easiest box to take out.

Thank you in advance

Re: Excessive fuel consumption 1998 2.8tdi
Paul, I will reply to your fuel consumption question. I have a 2.8Tdi LWB with an average fuel consumption of 8.2km/l for the past 2 years since keep record. This includes daily commute, heavy trailer pulling, 4x4 routes, and holidays with the venter and bicycles on top. Bearing in mind I travel at about 110km/h on the open road (9km/l) as to not exceed the 3000rpm psychological barrier . So I am basically confirming that your consumption is not normal for the vehicle.

As to what the problem is, that is another issue. Light maintenance I would advise to check out would include air filter and cleaning the intercooler. Both these will impact the power and efficiency of the motor. Bar that, your problem would likely be with the diesel pump timing (propable), diesel pump maintenance (possible), or injectors (likely), all jobs that I leave for the pro's to get it done properly and correctly. The injectors may very well only require a professional clean.

Enjoy the shorty - and please update when you find the culprit for when us other buggers hit the same prob

Any updates ? Mine is also heavy on diesel.

Re: Excessive fuel consumption 1998 2.8tdi
Hi all,
Even though I have been a member for about 3 months this is my first post. I think I can help with the answer to your problem. I have a 1998 2.8DT Blister fender. When I bought it in early 2012 mine also gave me a good consumption of between 10 to 11 liters/100 km. Naturally I wanted to be pro-active so since then I had the diesel pump serviced and calibrated and the injectors replaced. I did all this hoping that it would improve the fuel consumption. Low and behold it actually became worse. I then had the engine dyna-tuned. which once again made it worse. At this stage the Pajero's fuel consumption went up to between 13 and 14 liters / 100'km!! On the last day of last month (Friday) my Bosvark decided to stop running on the highway, and since I didn't know what was wrong I had it towed to a diesel and electrical workshop thinking it's probably electrical. They had it tested but found that it could rather be the diesel pump or engine. While waiting for my lift I was picking the mechanics brain and he told me that they usually set the pump timing at 12 deg but because we're up at Gauteng they reduce it to 8 deg, which makes the timing slightly faster and apparently makes it run much better which in turn improves the fuel consumption. Unfortunately I don't know if it's true or not because it turned out that the problem was my engine and at the moment it is standing at Mitspro, and I still don't know what's wrong! Hope this helps a bit.

Re: Excessive fuel consumption 1998 2.8tdi
Hi Paul, got my feedback of Bosvark standing at Mitspro....the timing chain has stretched so much that my timing went out and the pistons started hitting the valves, which eventually caused one of the valves heads on the no 1 chamber to break off and this was in turn hit into the outlet hole. Pretty much a stuff-up. Gonna cost me a small fortune to repair. On the up side this led me to believe that if your Pajero is already heavy on fuel, and you've done the diesel pump and injectors, I would seriously consider having the timing chain checked. This is quite easy to check. There is a tension-er on the front side of the engine. It works on a fixed part and spring-loaded ratcheted part which in turn tensions the chain. Take this out and you can immediately see how much the timing chain has stretched. Once you take out the tension-er it should be under tension. If it's not I would suggest you replace asap. If it is under tension - good - check how much of the spring-loaded part of the tension-er is sticking out of the fixed part. This will help you to determine how long still before you replace the timing chain. I hope this helps. Good luck.
