Clanging noise from the front of the engine
Took a drive to Durbanville on Saturday and about 15k's from the house I heard this clanging noise from the front. Stopped immediatley. Noise is increaes and decraeses with enigen revs. No overheating, nothing else looked out of the ordinary apart from the complete tappet cover being covered in oil. Oil light never came on but I pullednthe dipstick to find that it is not showing anything. Got some oil an d procede to put it in. First liter, nothing on the dispstick, second liter, nothing at all. Start the motor and let her idle, sound still there, but softer. Still nothing showing on the dipstick I proceed to put in anther liter. All o a sudden the oil shows half way up the dipstick.

Decide to tow the old lady home. Had her idling all the way to still have brakes and steering. The noise is the same and nothing else seems out of place. I have no loss off power and ther was no indication of anything when the noise started.

I was so peeved at this that I just parkedbthe car and left it for the rest of the weekend.

Now! Where do I start and what do I check?

Which engine?

Use a large screw driver as a stethoscope (plastic handle to your ear, and tip to various engine parts), to try and narrow down the search for the culprit.

In particular look at the crankshaft pulleys, some are bonded halves and do at times seperate.

Thanx I will start looking after work.

Re: Clanging noise from the front of the engine
So I had another opinion from some friends that is better informed and more knowledgable on this topic than what I am.

To them it sounds like a bearing knock. They reckon we must remove and redo completely.

Just got a final quote from a business in Cape Town that deals in imported engines. Quite a bit of a shock

Engine(without a dieselpump) - R 17 900
Labour - R 4 500
Service items(oil&water pump,ect)- R 1 250

AND they take the old motor in exchange.

This does not seem like such a viable option anymore. Busy waiting on pricing for a complete recon. Will be interesting how this compares to replacing.
