Carbon monoxide is a byproduct of an engines's internal combustion cycle, but this is colourless and odourless so you would not be able to smell or see it.
Depending on your motor (petrol or diesel), you might be able to detect a fuel smell if it is running rich, a good mechanic should be able to sort it out.

I have asimilar problem with the smell of exhaust fumes in the cab. Maybe there is an opening or is it a generic problem of rubber seals that deteriorates? Please help

Check if you rear door rubber seal is still in good condition, if it is you may just need to adjust your rear door closing mechanism so that it closes tighter. Also check for other leaks in your exhaust system, in the engine bay and under the body as it may leak in elsewhere.

Not sure what model you drive but many models have air inlet (or are they outlet?) flaps hidden under the rear light clusters and these flaps can get stuck open (often a cause of dust ingress on dirt roads).
So if you have an exhaust leak you could be drawing in fumes through these flaps.

Hi, I drive a 3.5V6 and also gives off this weird smell from the underside of the car and the exhaust. It is normally most apparent when the pajero stands still and idle. It smells something similar to oil, but it's not oil. I have been told the smell comes from the catalytic convertor.

Yip, catalytic converter can smell bad at times.
I sometimes wonder how much good the c/c does for the environment vs. how much bad mining the Platinum does for the environment

- another topic for another day though

We had a problem with a "rotten egg " smell from the daihatsu terios and were told its the cat that does not warm up enough and thus do not burn up all the nasties. I drive it a bit harder now and the smell is gone

When I contacted the company asking about the catalytic converter for my pajero( my engine is 6G72) the one who answered me told me that my car doesn't have catalytic, I was surprised.. but I don't know what to do with the bad smell!!! converter
