4M41 DID head gasket replacement
Re-posted from a different thread

Ive been busy with replacing my head gasket for a month now Ok,Ok Ive been renovating a house too. Anyway, Ive got a problem.

My cylinder block has the letter B stamped on it, which indicates a two notch head gasket according to the manual, There was a four notch fitted when I removed the head, Silvertons tested the coolant and found CO2 and diagnosed a blown head gasket, I haven't found any evidence of this after stripping. My Paj was running fine until the guage was often climbing into the red zone.

I have had the head pressure tested and skimmed (0.015mm)

Two questions:
Should I replace with the four notch?
What brand sealer is used at the front of the head gasket over the timming cover joints?

Thanks in advance.

Wilddog,

Sorry, I can't help with your two questions.

But, if you didn't see a problem with the head or gasket, then chances are you haven't addressed the over-heating problem yet.
Re: 4M41 DID head gasket replacement
Was there ever physical evidence of overheating? Could it be that there was no real overheating problem, but that it was just a wayward temperature gauge? The dodgy temperature gauge bugbear seems to afflict some Gen 3s.

It never actually boiled but non the less its worrying when your needle in the red in the middle of the bundu. I checked the guage out from the advice on other threads but the CO2 test on the coolant came up postitive so it was off with the head, Anyways Its done now all the new gaskets have arrived the head needed new vavle guides anyway 280000 looks like new inside :D Hopefully if the wife leaves me alone I can get it back together this weekend.

I forgot to mention one of the first things I did after changing the thermostat, Radiator cap and checking for leaks was to have the radiator cleaned.

I put my haed back on and all seemed well until I noticed oil in the water. Thinking I had maybe done something wrong, I didnt replace head bolts for instance, off came the head again.

I still didnt see any issues with the head gasket, so I stripped even further and removed the oil cooler and tested for leaks. No problem there either. :?

So another new gasket, new stretch bolts etc. and the heads back on again, guess what? Still mixing oil in the water!

So got to thinking, where else can oil enter the system? You got it.....Removed the pipes for the autobox cooler at the bottom of the radiator and guess what I find? Water and oil! I pressure test the system and there is a slow dripping of water coming out of the radiator where the oil pipes attach.

Im completley P*ssed off with Silverton radiators! I only sent it there because there were seeds and debris stuck in the fins and they didnt even get that as clean as I would have liked.

Now ive got to replace the radiator on top of all the other expense ive had. Dont get me wrong im releived Ive finally found the problem but FFS a so called proffessional company that actually causes damage to the part they were supposed to fix.

Im going there this afternoon. wish me luck..

Consider fitting a independent oil cooler for the transmission cooling.

Ok. Im interested! do you have more info? Have you done it or seen it done? where do you install it?
Re: 4M41 DID head gasket replacement
Google is your friend.

Just search for "transmission oil coolers" and read all about it.

They are not large, so you should be able to find a place to mount it.

Universal Coolers is a reputed supplier:

Re: 4M41 DID head gasket replacement
an external cooler needs to be thoroughly researched.

It will cool as much as it can and perhaps too cold ATF is not good for the autobox.

The radiator setup on the pajero is more a heat exchanger helping with warming up the ATF as well as keeping it as close as possible to the coolant temperature.

If the autobox is happy with cold ATF then a stand alone cooler is first prize.

I doubt the autobox will complain about too cold ATF so it seems like a good option to me.

Wilddog, I hate to be the pessimist but there could be an additional problem now that needs to be sorted before it gets very expensive.
If I understand your post properly, the oil in the coolant is ATF and not engine oil. This is due to a leak of the oil cooler which is housed in the bottom tank of the radiator. Am I correct ?
If this is the case, you may now have coolant in your gearbox. This could cause expensive damage.

PS: are you on the Wilddog Forum too?
