GEN 1 - General advice, please

I had my radiator recored by Silverton Wynberg a while ago and before refitting it I have decided to take a look behind the covers and do some preventative maintenance on the old lady. She's a 1990 Gen 1, 2.5 TDi, LWB with just over 210,000km on the clock.

I will be replacing all water hoses; I'd like to get those smart looking silicon (I think) type. Any suggestions on where to get these made or should I rather go for original hoses?

I will be replacing the thermostat; Mistu Sandton have stock, though seem a bit steep (R225). I'm tempted to pay this, though it's probably not superior to one from any spares shop. Comments?

The timing belt, balance belt and tensioner were replaced some time ago, not sure when but I'm thinking I may as well change them while she's accesible. Again, Mistu Sandton have stock and prices are R738, R487 and R372 respectively. Just wondering if I should dispense of the balance belt? I've heard that others have done so, but wonder what the general consensus is.

Finally, I'm considering replacing the water pump, however Mitsu Sandton don't have stock and the price is pretty steep, at R2600 ex. VAT! I need to check my records but I'm pretty sure the water pump was replaced in the past year or 2 and she's done next to no mileage since then, proibably less than 20,000km. Need to check my records, though.

Please can I have your expert opinions and tips for changing the timing belt, tensioner and the balance belt (if I decide to bother with it).

Thanks, Gareth

The correct thermostat is 76 deg C. Pt no. MD997605.

Change the belts and tensioners, there's no saving after the timing belt tensioner fails, as mine once did.

Four cylinder engines inherently vibrate, and though the vibes may not be felt in the cab, they are there within the engine and fittings, and doing no good. Fit good quality and replace every 100 000 km. I have used both Mitsu and Gates without problems, and still looking good when later replaced.

The water pump should be good at such a low km, assuming you've used conditioner in the cooling system since fitting. I fitted a non Mitsu pump, looked good quality and has been fine.
