3,5l V6 engine rebuild

Hi Guys and Girls,
I have a concern and a question.
I am new to this forum. We drive a 1999 blister fender 3,5l LWB Pajero and it is an absolute pleasure. Mrs drives it most of the time and I drive a Land Cruiser PUP for work.
2 weeks prior to Christmas our beloved car decided she does not want to idle and pick up revs. We took it to our closest dealer and on the way there the alternator seized up. We eventually loaded on a lowbed and had it delivered at the dealer.
1st prognosis. The alternator caused the car to stop idling and replacement cost R6k or R3k for a refurbished one. (In the days that I drove a Colt the same thing happened and at that time we could not find a replacement other than through the dealers.) With the alternator replaced and simultanious the starter done (310 000km the starter was dragging) the car still would not idle and it stood there for another day.
2nd prognosis. The bush where the butterflies are mounted on the the inlet manifold is worn out and a new Inlet manifold is required, for a bush i enquired at R7500,00. I fetched the inlet manifold, took it to a mate of mine and 2 hours later we had the manifold cleaned, manufactured a new bush and had it back at the dealer.
3rd prognosis. No, there has to be something wrong with the timing caused by the seizing of the alternator. Well I instructed them to replace the timing belt at the same time, since it was booked in in January for a timing belt in any case.
4th prognosis. Fuel pump. had that replaced at R6500k and it worked.
Took delivery of the car on the 24th, we wanted to go to Polokwane on the 25th. Well it went wonderfull, smooth, powerful etc. On the morning of the 25th we turned around at the Hammanskraal toll gate with a terrible knockin noise in the engine, drove it back to Midrand and took the Cruiser, a squeeze for 4 in the cab but it got us there at my sisters.
The Monday we took the Paj in and on Thursday we got the prognosis. It looks like a bearing failure in the block (sub assembly) There was nothing in the heads, nothing on the inlet manifold and they say there is nothing that they did that caused the knock. It sounded to me like the hydraulic lifters originally but the mechanic says it is not.
AFTER THIS LONG STORY MY 2 QUESTIONS
1) Why did this suddenly happen only 120 odd km after the dealers did work on the motor, although not inside? Or are they rolling me a mealie.
2) Does anybody know where I can obtain an engine rebuild manual, together with all the parts, since I can not wait till the engineers open on the 16th to have an engine rebuilt? M wife starts work on the 11th and we work in different directions. I have done 3 or 4 engines in my life and 2 of them is still in the family so I am not totally clueless.
Any ideas will be appreciated.
