2005 3.2 fuel consumption

Good day guys

I hope you can advise me on whether I'm just not use to the pajero's fuel consumption or if I have to get my diesel pump calibrated or either have the injectors checked.

So my pajero is a 2005 3.2 LWB with 200682km n the clock, I just recently bought it about 2 months ago (so don't know what the fuel consumption should be) I've read that on average in the city you are suppose to get around 12.5L/100km (I'm under correction with this figure.

I use about 15L/100km :shock: and with my granny style of driving (rarely do I go past 2100rpm) I'm suspecting that there might be some parts of the fueling system that needs to be checked.

Any Ideas on what the problem might be?

Hi KDB,

15l/100km may be a little on the high side. A lot does depend on driving conditions, driving style, whether or not you have a roofrack etc.

Of course, fuelling does come into the equation.

For peace of mind, it is worth getting the injectors checked or replaced (can be with reconditioned units) at this sort of mileage.

The most widely respected company for this is Alan Black in Springs if you are within a few 100km of that area. Typically they will put your car on their rolling road dyno and use that as the basis for diagnosing whether only the injectors need refurbishing or whether the diesel pump / sensors need attention.

Apart from high fuel consumption, overfuelling as a result of poor injector operation / poor spray pattern / pump maloperation can cause hot spots and burn holes in cylinders. And that leaves bigger holes in bank balances!

Hi

What tyres do you have on? I fitted slightly bigger BFG muds 265/75/r16 over standard 265/70r16 and makes about increases consumption from 9km/lt to 7.5. Real increase not so much, as also changes odo reading due to larger circumference. Speedo is now almost 100% true speed. Ie 120 on speedo is 119 on gps.

Roofrack with awn also makes about a 1km/lt on mine when driving at 120kph.

I have a 2001 3.2 did, but manual transmission.

Thank you Andrew and Benvdm

I'll have the pajero checked for my peace of mind.

Just a little more on the vehicle:
  • It's an auto (which I do know affects the consumption);
    • I do have 265/65/17 HT tyres on;
      • My figures are based on city driving only.

Hi

Your tyres are standard size, so should have no effect. I know auto-box can be negatively effected by tyre size, as can hunt a bit more and lock-up mode do not work always work correctly at around 120kph.

In town I get around 12.5-13lt per 100km, but we do not have very heavy traffic in Windhoek. Guess it would be s bit higher with lots of stop & go traffic. My dad gets about the same with his 2006 3.2 did a/t, but he has a swb.

I do not think manual vs auto makes much of a difference on the pajero.

On your km's, maybe also have your egr checked out- exhaust gas re-articulation. Can become blocked- mine has been closed-off by the previous owner and apparently has some power benifit vs blocked unit. Cons are that engine takes a bit longer to get to normal operating temperature. Mine is now standing on 237 000, but was allready blocked off when I bought it on 198 000km.

Regards

Bennie

I also just got mine at high mileage and with combined traffic (Urban and highway) I got 7km per liter... I assume this is within the normal spec of what you wil be getting. I also drive Auto with 265/70 16s and granny style driving. Maybe check out the pump and injectors, there could also be a fuel leak in one of the lines...who knows.

Did the gen3 come out with 17inch,why do i think 16s.That could be why the OP is getting higher consumption
