"Pinging" sound when engine labours 3,2 Di-D

Hi all,
This is the second time I hear this sound coming from the engine. When ascending a climb and the engine starts to labour in what ever gear it is in, just before she gears down, there is what seems to be a "pinging" sound from the engine. As far as I know a diesel cannot "ping"?
Any ideas, she now has 300 000 km on the clock and never been opened.
Thanks
Andre. :?

Try to add 500ml 2 stroke oil to the diesel when filling up.

Pikanini,
I do use 2So, I add 200 mil, with every tank.
I would like to know what can cause this sound.
Can a diesel pre-ignite
Can there be a carbon build-up, or a timing problem?
The ECU should adjust the timing and as far as I know it is not possible to manually adjust it?
Thanks

I assume you have a manual? I think that because of the power that the 3.2 diesel have one sometimes let it labour a little too much in a low gear where an auto would have geared down. I have a manual 3.2 and also hear this pinging every now and again. In fact there is one turn with a bit of an uphill close to my house that leads to this noise every time!

Cats,
Mine is an auto.
And exactly as you say the first time I heard this was in Lesotho, on my way to Afri ski, sharp bends with an steep incline. Its when I release the accelerator for the bend, negotiate the bend and then slight increase in pedal for the uphill. If I put foot she kicks back and the sound is gone.
What perturbs me is
What is causing it?
Is there something wrong with the engine... injectors... carbon build-up.....timing?

From Entabeni,

Hello Vickaa, I have just posted my 2006 Auto 3.2 DiD engine failure today and wonder if the pinging sound which you describe was a warning of the failure which I have just experienced! For the last year or two I have heard the same thing when climbing medium slopes. Each time I went out of cruise control and lifted my foot slightly to avoid the pinging in case it was damaging. Perhaps the pinging sound is due to an explosive burning of the mixture instead of a progressive one, much like in petrol engines?

I am now contemplating the next step in fixing my problem!

Thanks for your posting.

Entabeni,
Thanks for your information, you now have me worried, I have not serviced my injectors ever.....
I am now of mind to remove the cylinder head and completely overhaul it, valves, seats, injectors, remove all carbon.
Would you please keep us up to date as what you find on your engine (hope there is not expensive damage).
I am wondering on the difficulties to remove the cylinder head....timing marks...torque settings....valve clearance etc. any advice will be most helpful.
Many thanks
Andre Vickers

My car has been doing this since 75000km. It is now standing on 222000km!

I had the pump re-conned and injectors replaced at 190K km and although the issues I had at the time with loss of power were resolved, she still "pings" to this day on a long uphill with the caravan hooked up.

Had it at various Agents, MITSPRO and even at DASTEK on the Dyno to try and replicate the noise - no luck.

When I have some time I want to look into the issues mentioned in the post below by Martin re possible exhaust manifold and/or intercooler leaks.

Will keep you posted.

I also have this ping problem when I tow my Echo trailer uphill. I see the original post is from 2013 and there is no probable cause reported. My 2006 3.2 DiD GLX auto has been doing this since the beginning, 208k km on the clock, engine never opened and neither diesel pump nor injectors serviced.

I have never heard the ping sound when not towing.

I would appreciate it if progress on this issue could be reported - diesels can't ping as far as I know. I can take a big wild guess and say that I use Diesel 50, and I don't know if this may contribute.

Other than the mysterious and unexplained ping sound the car is masterpiece, just go wherever I point the nose to.
