Engine failure
Just got home from a long trip minus my 2006 3.2 swb,146,000km up till last friday my car was going like a boeing then 150k,s south of Goerge a sudden clatter Loss of power and plenty of white smoke!
My trip started in Ballito then Jhb then Fish River Canyon,Sendlingsdrift Pont,Honderklip Bay,West Coast Namaqua Park,Lamberts Bay,Somerset West and then home along the east coast
My car and trailer plus my wife and I were flat bedded to the Mits agent in Goerge (also Landrover,Ford,Mazda. what a mix!!)by Cross Country insurance. This is a magic company to deal with, phoned every 30 min to see if we were OK until safely in Goerge
Being late on Friday nothing was checked apart from a dirty fuel filter until Monday when a compression test revealed no pressure on No3 cylinder!!These guys gave us a loan car for the w/end,another magic company to deal with. Now waiting to get it home

Re: Engine failure
Hi PJB,

Sorry to hear about your situation.

This sounds like a hole in the top of the piston caused by overfuelling or poor spray pattern. Very strange at that low mileage.

Is that 146000 km genuine mileage? It seems very low for a 2006 model. Are you the first owner?

Were there any tell-tale signs at all before this? Like temperature running a bit higher than normal, higher fuel consumption, etc?

Did you have to put in any questionable fuel during your trip?
Did your diesel filter water light come on at all during your trip?

Did anyone work on the injectors or fuel pump recently?

Any other clues / ideas?

What is your action plan now?

Hi PJB,

One more question. I see from a previous post that you were looking at chipping Pajeros. Did you end up doing so?

Re: Engine failure
To answer your questions
The car was a demo when i bought it in 2006,the low kms is due to it being my toy.I drive a suzuki during the week.
No chip ,whole car is standard
I use 50pp diesel where I can but on the West Coast lots of places didn,t have it,Port Nolloth over R14 a liter for 500pp
this trip I put 500pp in 4 times
Just no warning at all,no warning lights, nothing.I,m having it transported here next week(not cheap)
Thanks for your concern

PJB

Sorry to read about your troubles. Have you ever had injectors tested or replaced while you had the vehicle? Mine is also in ICU but due to the dieselpump wearing out just under 300K km. I had my injectors replaced around 100000km and again checked at 200000km and was planning to again replace at 300000km to try and avoid exactly what you have experienced, so interested to know if this was done on yours at any stage?

Re: Engine failure
PJB sorry about your problem. This and other recent posts have given me some concerns. My SWB 2006 DiD has 147 000 (genuine)km's.On a trip over Christmas near Vryheid, I experienced a pinging noise from the engine on several long climbs when the car was in 5th gear. Sounded almost like pinking on a petrol engine. The noise disappeared as soon as it kicked down to a lower gear. I've never had this before or since. Car was fully loaded but no roof rack or trailer.

The recent posts about similar problems being possibly caused by injectors rang alarm bells but I thought that at my fairly low milage this should not be a problem. Now that PJB has had a failure at a similar milage, I feel further concerned. Should I be getting the injectors replaced? Is there any other possible cause for the pinging?

The car is used daily and I have always used 50ppm when available but occasionally have had to use 500ppm. I am in Durban and all servicing to date has been through the main dealers. If I need to replace the injectors, is this work that I should entrust to the dealers or go to one of the diesel specialists (?) which seems a bit more risky unless someone can recommend one in the Durban area. What sort of cost would I be looking at, although I suppose if it can prevent a catastrophic failure it would be money well spent? I'd appreciate any more thoughts on this issue.

Re: Engine failure
Prevent a catastrophy!

Have the injectors tested at least.

It might just be that only one is defective, or they just need servicing.

Use it or lose it: Dose the diesel with 1:200 ratio two stroke oil. (500ml 2SO / 100l diesel).
